Time To Waste More Money: In App Purchases For All

In App Purchases: the feature of iPhone OS 3.0 that lets developers have small "expansion packs" for their apps available to download separate from the app. Before, it was only allowed for paid apps, so that free apps stay free. Apple has announced that it will now be available to all apps. This is a good, and a bad thing. Good because now developers don't have to make two versions of their apps, a lite, and a full paid app. Devs can now just create one app with certain features unlocked, then through in app purchases, give users more levels and such. This is also a bad thing for us consumers. Most people don't like spending money, so downloading a free app only to find out that we have to pay more to get all the features will be disappointing. Hopefully developers have some sense and only use In App Purchases for free apps when it's justifiable. For example, Tap Tap Revenge 3 is currently $.99because it uses In App Purchases to give users premium songs. Now that In App Purchases can work with free apps, they can drop the price and still have that functionality. Buying more songs seems like a reasonable use for In App Purchases, but buying more levels for a simple game that is free isn't justifiable in my mind, but that's just me. Anyway, thanks for reading, and sorry for the lack of stories lately, I've been caught up with the tech stories for Tech Today. See you all next time.
