Review: "Mission: Repair" (iPhone/Mac repair)

Two days ago I lost the love of my life.... my jailbroken, dinged, and scuffed 8 Gig iPhone 3G.

In my infinite klutziness I dropped the poor dear onto a tile floor and though it booted and was recognized by iTunes the LCD display was scrambled like a bad egg. I spent about 6 hours going to Apple, AT&T, and Best Buy, wanting to replace the phone outright, but being told that simply buying a new device would cost me $199 (more than I paid in the first place). And that such a quote "Service Replacement" would mess up my already outrageous AT&T contract to the tune of a $299 buyout/upgrade. I also had the option of paying $199 to get the entire top half of my phone replaced but I couldn't afford that either. During my seventh hour, now at an AT&T store uptown I asked the manager one last time about my iPhone options, and he hesitantly mentioned a place called "Mission: Repair." He said that they could swap my LCD screen for a new one for $99 while I wait or overnight for $75. This sounded great, as my budget was exactly $99. To save some money I decided on the $75 option and sent my iPhone in. The next day my phone returned, fully operational and in a nice protective shipping box. I did note a tiny dead pixel on the replacement screen but it wasn't worth the hassle of another 24 hours without an iPhone and since the old screen had about twelve dead pixels this was an improvement. I do not know if they use the identical Apple parts or generics but I would assume the latter since the new screen seems markedly brighter than the Apple shipping display.

Overall "Mission: Repair" did a great job with amazing turnaround time. They have one location out in Kansas but their business is primarily online. They are much cheaper than the Genius Bar (If you are out of warranty) and are very nice, when you call their phone number you get a real person right off the bat. They also fix Macs and offer upgrades as well.

Overall Rating: ☆☆☆☆ (out of 5)
