iPhone/iPod Touch 2.2.1 Jailbreak (video)

Recently a new firmware update for iPhone and iPod Touches was released; firmware 2.2.1. This firmware, unlike it predecessors 2.2 and 2.1, isn't a host to a bevy of new features, but instead is offered more so as stabilization software. Even though there isn’t much changed in this software, I just like many others I'm sure is fond of updating my phone; more-so in hopes of finding something new. This essentially will be my run down of the entire process from start to finish with a link to a Youtube video where I show you how its done using the software Quickpwn.

Before I start, you will need to know a few things,

  • this update will disable the Yellown0w software unlocks, as well as any others
  • will permanently upgrade your baseband to the newer version. In order to not risk this, follow step outlined specifically for the Pwnage tool, and not for Quickpwn.
  • Make sure your phone is NOT in airplane mode

For those of you using a unibody Macbook or Macbook Pro, these following steps are crucial to you. Navigate to the Apple Developer Connection (ADC) website and register to become a free member there. From there navigate to the following page (http://developer.apple.com/hardwaredrivers/download/usbdebug.html) and download the disk image “IOUSBFamily-315.4-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.5 Build 9F33” (yes, that is a “5” in 10.5.5 - this is a developer debug package of the USB kernel extension). Also download the “IOUSBFamily-327.4.0-log.dmg” for Mac OS X 10.5.6 Build 9G55” image and Quickpwn.

Once completed, update your iPhone or iTouch as you normally would from within iTunes. Disconnect all USB equipment and install the first disk image we downloaded from the ADC site.

**Note: this does not restore your Mac to the 10.5.5 software, just you chipsets I/O drivers to the 10.5.5 state in order to recognize the i-“insert device here” is in DFU mode**

Restart, connect only necessary peripherals (i.e. keyboard, mouse and iPhone/iTouch at most), and run Quickpwn following the onscreen directions.

**Note this does not remove any prior data or settings from the phone**

Once completed, close everything out, install the second disk image we downloaded from the ADC site and restart your Mac again to restore the I/O chipset drivers to the 10.5.6 state and reconnect all you peripherals. You have now successfully completed the jailbreak process for the iPhone or iTouch of any generation.
