Linux Ubuntu - First impressions
Hello everyone, if you follow me on twitter, you will know that I recently downloaded Ubuntu. Now I am going to tell you what I think of it...
First of all the layout, the layout is very mac like (some screenshots follow)
Also, a lot of the icons in Ubuntu are very similar to mac icons e.g. The movie player symbol is exactly the same the the iMovie symbol (the scene and take box...thing...?)
Anyway, as I was saying, there are a lot ofsimilaritiesbetween Mac and Ubuntu.
A
As you can see, the dock and toolbar come straight from Mac OS X. (The Ubuntu dock has a ''3D Dock'' setting which allows it to look identical to OS Leopard)
Secondly, Ubuntu isn't very...lets say creative, what I mean by that is, there isn't much freedom to make videos, edit photos ect... Yet Ubuntu has a couple of Video editing applications pre-installed in applications. But there isn't much too them, there are simple but at the same time user friendly, There are no available transitions or effects in these editors, just a timeline and a ''drag and drop'' area.
Linux have seemed to focus more on games than anything else, the games can be entertaining and some get quite addictive at times but after a good few minutes of playing games, you realize that GAMES is what linux REAL intentions where. Yeah, the games are ''minimal' and there isn't much creativity in Ubuntu but with a little work, Linux could be a really good OS.
Thirdly and lastly, Ubuntu is a VERY easy to use OS but it has the bare basics of what any other operating systems have, but the user friendly interface and ease of locating things makes up for some of the flaws in this OS.
Would I recommend Ubuntu?
Yes, give it a quick test drive and see what you think. Download it from Ubuntu.com.
Thanks for reading, try out Ubuntu, and don't forget. This is my opinion and my FIRST impression, so if your a linux user don't be offended by anything said in this blog entry.
Again, Thanks for reading.

so two operating systems both based on unix are similar? who wuldve thunk it
Of course two Unix-based systems are going to be similar, but you must remember it is the interface and intuitiveness built atop this strong code-base that really makes the operating system, and therefore this article gets a thumbs up for being insightful from me.
I must point out, that Ubuntu does not feature a native dock. And there are tons of video editors available for Linux. You just need to look outside the application manger.
