Flip Ultra HD Review
A few weeks ago I was sent a Flip Ultra HD from Pure Digital. Pure Digital is famous for it's popular Flip Mino camera series. Well Pure Digital is back with the Flip Ultra. The Flip Ultra HD has many new features that the Mino did not. One of the hardware changes is the LCD screen on the back. In the previous generation camera, the screen was 1.5". However in the Ultra and Ultra HD the screen size is a much bigger, 2". Moving into the inside, the Ultra HD runs on two double A (AA) batteries. Pure Digital is very kind to supply a set of rechargeable batteries with the purchase of their new camcorder. The Ultra HD can film for up to 120 minutes or 2 hours. The Flip Mino only filmed for 60 minutes. I filmed a sample clip with the Ultra HD and my previous camera the Aiptek HD. As you can see below there is a major difference in the video quality between them.

Clearly, you can tell that the Ultra HD exceeds expectations when it comes to capturing natural color and light. Although I did love this camera, there were a few things that were issues. The first one was the chrome finish on the side. It really attracts finger prints. However a quick wipe with a microfiber and the prints come right off. My second issue was when you plug the camera in (via USB) by the built in USB plug, the rest of the camera hangs putting strain on the the plug. But again, I offer a solution. You could either put something (maybe the microfiber you used to wipe the prints off) under the camera so that it is level. Another option would be to use a USB to USB port cable and attach it to the camera, that way the camera doesn't have to leave the tripod or where ever you keep it. There aren't any customizable features, yet. Just a choice from black or white. Both which come with the chrome bezel.
Overall, I gave this camera a 9.5/10. There was really nothing wrong with it other than the minor things listed above. And the camera had great audio and video quality. You saw a sample of the video quality but to hear the audio quality, you'll have to watch my video review here.
Thanks again to Pure Digital for allowing me to review their new camcorder.
