iPod touch 3.0: Is it Worth It?

We all know the iPhone 3.0 SDK was released on March 17th. This summer, the upgrade will be coming to the public; free for iPhone user, but $9.95 for iPod touch users. Why does Apple always rip off the iPod touch users?! It's probably because that the iPod touch doesn't use a data plan, so they make up the cost in software upgrades. Now, the important thing when the time comes is to ask yourself: "Is it worth it?"

I'm not sure that it actually is worth $9.95, myself. The iPhone, with 3.0, gets MMS, turn-by-turn GPS, stereo bluetooth, landscape keyboard, cut-and-paste, Youtube account access, push notification for all apps, and in-app purchase. Since the iPod touch doesn't have a GPS chip or cellular chip, you can't get the MMS or GPS functions. That said, the 1st Gen. iPhone does not get these functions either, but at least they get [the update] for free. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but stereo bluetooth isn't compatible with the iPod touch, is it? Anyway, for the iPod touch, since they are charging, the upgrade may not entirely be worth it right away. My opinion would be quite the opposite if the price weren't so high (maybe $4.95).

Now, before you go and call me a "cheap-o" or whatever, please bear in mind that these are harse economic times. $9.95 can be used in other, more practical ways. In some places, even, $9.95 can buy a good amount of gas for your car! If I ever do upgrade to the 3.0 on my iPod touch, I know it won't be for awhile. I don't really need it.

The good thing, right off the bat, is that Apple charges through iTunes credit. You don't have to go into the store to upgrade. Overall, however, I say wait before upgrading, even if it is a few months away.

I think it's ridiculous to be charging that much for an update, which i personally don't even feel is THAT big. I never really cared or wanted any of those features they are releasing so i am most likely not going to buy it. But seriously, i paid a lot of money for a Touch. It needs to be free. Microsoft never charges for it's updates, i wonder why Apple does.

I look at these kind of updates, from 2.x to 3.0 the same thing as upgrading from Tiger to Leopard (XP to Vista). You have to pay to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard, as well as from 2.x to 3.0.

Also, after being able to use the 3.0 software for myself, I think it's completely worth a measly $9.95.
