WWDC 2009. Wow.
I would like to apolgize for my long absence of posts but I was spending a class trip in Washington DC. Now, onto WWDC. The firt thing they talked about was how their userbase has tripled since the last WWDC, remember how they boasted about the 22 million mac users worldwide? They’ve got 75 million now.So to start it off they decided they would update their notebook lineup. They added the 13 inch MacBook to the MacBook Pro line becuase, well, they share lots of the same features, they have also added firewire back into the MacBook (now 13 inch MacBook Pro) and they have also replaced the express card slot with an SD card slot, something I have wanted for a while. They new MacBook Pro also have had their batterey replaced by the one in the 17 Inch MacBook Pro, 7 hours of batterey life. There is also a model in the MacBook Pro lineup, that is 15 inch, that starts at $1699. It has 4GB of RAM and a 2.53 Ghz processor, however it does not have the 9600m GT, just the 9400M. However, the pricing on the new MacBook Pros is extermely competitive never the less.Next up, we have Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Leopard introduced lots of new features that many people are excited about. Bertrand Serlet starts off by saying that Windows 7 is another Vista and will not match up to Snow Leopard. He begins to talk about the many great features of the current Mac OS X and then specifically moves to Expose, and then finally announces that Expose has been built right into the dock. Simply click the App and hold the mouse button and all the windows fan out. Simple. They have also improved the finder, they havent changed it at all, simply recoded it in Cocoa. You can also preview PDFs and movies within the finder without using Coverflow. They also added Exchange support, oh dear. They have also made installs 45% faster, and after an install it will look on your computer to see if it can free up disk space, ovver 6GB can be freed. They are also adding handwriting recgonition to the multi touchtrackpad. They also released Safari 4 on the day of WWDC. Not too many changes, but they do brag about HTTP loading and Javascript loading. A new guy comes up and demosSnow Leopard, many people have noted the new wallpaper, it’s pretty nice. Anyways, they’ve updated stacks, basically stacks are now mini finder i guess, in grid view you can browse through folders. Bertrand is back up and says there are great new features in Snow Leopard, and along with it, there are also great new technolgies. He continues to say that it is possible to have 16 Million GB of RAM. “Unlimited”. They then go on and brag about OpenCL. Amazing how many people are supporting OpenCL, some names I have never even heard of before. To wrap it up, they say that Mac OS X Snow Leopard will be $29. Yes, just $29. Wow.
“Now I’d like to turn to Scott… for the iPhone.” Here we go kids. Hang on to your hats. (Engadget)Scott does what every Apple employee does at a conference, talk about how good they are already doing. He says they’ve got 40,000 Applications in the App Store and over 40 million iPhone devices.Holy crap. They then show those little videos that showcase and iPhone developer and their little story about how the iPhone let them make their own application and all that, sometimes make use want to cry. After the videos are over Scott talks about the new Cocoa Touch and Cut, Copy, Paste, undo support, and spotlight on iPhone OS 3.0, yay. He also says that TV Shows and Movies can be downloaded from the iTunes Store right on an iPhone and there is also iTunes U support. Next up, tethering! Woot, there was a big article about this in MacWorld Magazine.Unfortunately it needs carrier support, and its available in 22 countries under 44 carriers, but there is no mention of AT&T. They also have improved the iPhones safari, more bragging about Javascript and HTTP. THey have also added a neat feature called find my iPhone.Easy enough to understand, they demoed it late last year and showed how you could also do a remote wipe. Easy stuff. They’ve also officialy added the push notifications to iPhone OS 3. “Push, text alerts, numerical badges, and sounds alerts.” More applications are demoed. Then TomTom comes up and talks about GPS. People start to get excited, they know the new iPhone is coming. More application demos.. and then….
It’s here! It’s got a new 3 megapixel camera which is video capable. The video feature is also an API, so developers can put it right into their applications. There is also voice control, much like the same features that speak back to you on the new iPod Shuffle. “Play Artist Song” you know the deal. They’ve also got a new compass application, not really that amazing but still useful. The phone it’s self doesn’t look all that different, but it’s still pretty nice.
I hope you enjoyed this post, I apoligize for the recent absence. Big thank you to Engadget for letting their images be public.
