According to The Register, a Chinese engineer committed suicide after being suspected of stealing prototypes of the new iPhone 4G.
25 Year old Sun Danyong, jumped from the 12th floor after he could only account for 15 of the 16 prototypes entrusted to him.
Now here comes the part that makes me wonder whether or not Sun did steal the next generation iPhone. The phones were given to him on the 9th of July and he reported that one was missing on the 13th of July 2009 to his bosses.
Why would a thief report a missing phone?
The guy is an engineer so we can rule out stupidity. Obviously when you report a missing prototype the following comes into play:
An investigation would follow Internal security footage will be checked You loose the level of trust you`ve build up (no promotion in the near future)
Spy vs Spy
Has the mobile industry reached a stage of spy vs spy when it come to new technology?
Let`s be honest, competition in the industry is reaching new levels. The first signs were already visible when RIM took on Samsung claiming that the Samsung BlackJack is moving in on their BlackBerry marketing angle and similarities when it comes to aesthetical features.
So keeping that in mind, can we expect action against Leaf with their new HTC Snap that comes close to the BlackBerry Curve on face value?
Can we expect Apple to start moving in on companies like Nokia and Samsung?
Because honestly, the Omnia was in principle a technological chip of the same technology and the Nokia 5800 moved a step closer to becoming an iPhone clone.
But is it enough reason to jump out the window?
I can imagine that if a competing company did go and pay the engineer a sum of money for the prototype, that they would make sure that they cover their tracks. Surely they can`t afford a major law suite that could hurt their corporate image if caught?
Maybe they made sure that Sun Danyong made his dramatic exit. If he was guilty, what would scare a man this much?
I seriously would die for an iPhone.
