Where To Buy A Laptop Hard Drive & What To Buy

Upgrading your hard drive can really help boost your productivity, whether it be faster, or just not having to worry about filling up your last couple gigs. The hardest part about upgrading your hard drive is knowing what to buy, and what brand to get.

There are many different websites to buy hard drives from, and choosing the right one is all about listening to other peoples compliments, and complaints. One of the more popular Mac hardware websites is OWC. They sale just about everything for your mac, and have some of the best prices. That's the website that I (will) buy things for my mac from. They have very good customer service also, which is definitely a plus.

What brand to get is easily decided by the experience that you have had with different brands. If you have never purchased an internal or external hard drive, then my suggestion is to find the model that you are interested in getting, and then search online about what other people have said about it. If you get a lot of search results, then that probably means that it isn't such a good hard drive.

What to buy is very easy. The main, and obvious thing that you want is the hard drive. You also want to get an enclosure if you are going to put it inside of a computer with only one hard drive bay. If you have a computer with multiple hard drive bays then just buy the hard drive and pop it into an open hard drive bay.

Another important thing that you need to make sure you get is the right software. The software that I suggest is Carbon Copy Cloner. It is very simple to do, and you can clone the hard drive in a couple clicks. Before you clone your hard drive you need to make sure that you make is Mac OS X compatible. This is very simple to do. Just open up Disk Utility, and select the hard drive. Go in the Erase tab, and make sure the Volume Format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Name it what ever you want and click erase. Now that it is compatible with the Mac, open Carbon Copy Cloner and clone the hard drive.

Once the hard drive you bought is cloned to the internal hard drive, all you have to do is instal it in your computer. For instructions on how to instal a hard drive in the aluminum macbook, read directions here.
