2011: Year of the Tablet

This year we have seen the release of the much anticipated Apple iPad, which has to be said is a fantastic device. However just like the iPhone, other companies launch impressive products that are dubbed iPad or iPhone “killers”. I expected their to be a flourish of new tablets in 2010 to rival the iPad. However, this is not the case. It appears that many companies have announced new tablet computers, but few have actually released them. Many of these devices that have been announced seem to out do the iPad completely, but it is important to remember, come this January the iPad will be one year old. This means a new iPad is due.

The current iPad comes without a webcam or “FaceTime” and only has 128 MB of RAM, compared to the iPhone 4 which comes with 256MB. It is inevitable that the “iPad 2″ or second generation iPad will come with those features. When multi-tasking comes to the current iPad it will become slower. With each iPad update the iPad first generation (the one on sale now) will become slower and slower. Trust me, it happened to my iPhone 3G. Right now the iPad looks rather small compared to its rivals. However it is important to remember that the “iPad 2″ will be released in Spring 2011, This almost certainly will packed with new features (including FaceTime, more RAM).

So to my original point, 2011, I suspect will be “Year of the Tablet” with the release of the iPad 2 and many other tablets that are to be released in 2011, tablets ranging from running Windows 7 to Android OS. I suspect 2011 will be a very interesting year for the tablet computer market. Only time will tell what 2011 will hold.
