Determining A Case Strategy

As long as we have Apple devices that we pay hundreds of dollars for, we will want to protect those beauties. So as I am getting an iPad for Christmas, I had to determine what kind of case(s) I was going to pick up. This is how I solved the mystery of which case to buy.

Mobility

As far as cases go you have a few options in terms of their mobility. This is the first thing that I thought of when picking a case. Here are some of the common cases and they are classified as being a light, medium, or heavy case:

Light: Skins, Screen Protectors  Ex. Zagg Invisible ShieldSkinIt skins

These cases are going to provide you with the highest level of mobility, yet the least level of protection. Although you may not get the protection from drops, cases like these give excellent scratch protection. The thing that I love about Apple devices is their beautiful design, and with these you get that feeling of a slim, sexy device even more.

Medium: Folios, Snap-On Shells   Ex. Apple iPad Case, Incase Snap Case

These cases are the most common cases that give you some nice drop protection(varies with case) and excellent scratch protection. The problem is, if you buy a little bit of a cheaper case, then you can have some fitting issues. I was going to buy one of these, but then found that the shell isn't flush with the back of the iPad. These cases do add a bit of bulk, which is why I don't like them, however they give some nice features and protection.

Heavy-Duty: OtterBox DefenderiPad bags

Now these are the meatiest of the cases, and will ensure that iPad from any serious damage if dropped. The problem that I found with most of these cases aside from being heavy/big, is that they carry a bigger price tag. That typically draws people away from this type of case. If you want great protection and have some money to go around go and pick this one up.

The Verdict

Although protection is good, I don't need it when I am just using the iPad around my home or wherever else I take it. I do need protection during the transportation of my iPad and when I am not using it. The ideal option I think for most people and for me is to get a light-weight case and then get a heavy-duty one for travel. I just bought the Zagg Invisible Shield for both the back and front of my iPad so that I get the slim iPad experience while still have scratch protection. I am also going to pick up either a sleeve or a bag for when I am not using the iPad and I want it safe. I think that this is the best combination that you can get because if you want to use the iPad almost naked then you get to do so, yet you have maximum safety when you need/want it. I hope that others also incorporate this idea and that you try it out yourself. One more thing that you can do with the Invisible Shield on your iPad that you can't with a hardshell case or folio is put the iPad into the docking station.
