Sony introducing new DRM into PSP titles

With the American release of SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3 yesterday, Sony released alongside with it, a new security feature hoping to eradicate the huge PSP piracy scene.

So what is the new security feature then? Well.. the security feature only restricts online play of the title by forcing the user to register the title through the PlayStation Network before online gameplay is granted. People buying the UMD version of the title will get a serial key to enter online whereas people purchasing the digital copy will automatically register.

So what if you want play a pre-owned copy of the game? SCEA director John Koller stated that “you will be required to purchase a PSN entitlement voucher for US$ 20 in order to play online.”

SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 3 is the first title to introduce this new security feature as sort of a trial run seeing as it is a very popular online game on the PSP, if successful will more than likely be spread to other new PSP titles.

Hopefully this feature will cut down the mass-piracy of the PSP and lead to some very good games to be release, John Koller also stated “piracy affects more than just the creators of the game. It also affects the consumers who purchase titles expecting a high-quality gaming experience. Game development is a long and costly process that can take years to create and many more dollars to develop, manufacture, market and distribute.

Our goal is to keep this development pipeline flowing with creative new IPs, well known franchises and pick up and play experiences that all can legally enjoy. That’s something that all fans can be happy about.”
