iPhone OS 4.0 Beta Review

So I have had the iPhone OS 4.0 beta for about 48 hours now and all I can say is WOW. Apple has really answered my prayers in this OS, multitasking works like a dream and the entire user experience has just been revamped. For example the addition of a reflective dock instead of the old stale 2D version really highlights whatever your background image is, and the redesign of most of the Apple apps have been done beautifully.

Alright, enough of the good, because you can go read apple.com if you really want to know every detail. Following is a list of the few flaws I have encountered:

- Several third party apps, including Echofon which crash repeatedly

- The multitasking interface does not allow you to quit multiple applications at once, for instance if you are trying to free up some RAM you would have to tap and hold then tap to delete for each app which you have opened. Even if you turn your device off and back on multitasking still shows the apps as active

- SMS app is sometimes unresponsive when trying to type

- Cut/copy/paste is buggy in the SMS app, when trying to highlight a message to copy the text changes color but the copy dialogue box never appears

- iPod can sometimes be very slow to open for the first time

- changing wallpapers does not always work, especially when done through the pictures app instead of the settings>wallpapers page

Note: I am using an iPhone 3GS 32GB so there are no compatibility issues because of the model.

Finally I would just like to say that this software upgrade when out of beta should be the best iteration yet and will put the iPhone even further above any other “smart” phone out there.

How are you going to give a review on something that isn't even out yet. Of course it's going to have issues, its not out yet! It's not even technically in beta. It's out so devs can create apps for it. genius!

I know its not out yet.. thats why I gave a review of the BETA! And Apple may not call it a beta but it is technically a beta. If you don't believe me then look up the word "beta" in a dictionary.. As a developer I should know. The reason I have the new OS is because I am a developer and am giving a quick overview of my experience thus far. Notice that I said that the OS would be great once out of beta. Obviously there are going to be bugs, I was just pointing them out. Stop swingin on Apple's nuts and try and do your research next time.
