I Dare You To Move

A lot of people are looking at Playstation Move in the wrong light. The majority of people I talk to about Move are under the impression it's a Wii clone, and say that they want to sit back and relax when they play games -- not break a sweat dancing around like the strange women on the Wii - and now Playstation Move adverts. I understand why certain onlookers will see the Playstation Move as a Wii clone, especially when taking into account Sony's marketing strategy.

Okay, it is a Wii clone. A remote-like motion controller and a smaller version with an analogue stick. Sounds like a Wii to me. So, does that mean the PS3 was a PS2 clone? Because the controls were almost the exact same? No. It's not only the hardware, but the software that defines a console, so get the misconception that it's just going to be another Wii out of your mind. Yes, there will be similar games, there will be those cheap family games bundled onto one disc, and there will be even more sports games. I'll get back to that in a bit.

The second point that is brought up a lot is that us "hardcore gamers" don't want to get up off our chairs when we play games. The only acceptable form of movement is our fingers tapping and our thumbs moving left and right. For those of us who have the energy, we may even consider moving the six axis to stop Nathan Drake falling off a log. But apart from that, any other movement is unacceptable. I'm not sure why this is, I think it may be just the fact that some people simply don't like change. Personally, I love it. I don't see anything wrong with having to stand up or dance around like a crazy person in the name of fun but don't get me wrong -- I completely understand wanting to play Heavy Rain while sitting down, getting immersed into the game without having to worry about doing the YMCA every time a fight scene pops up. But that's the thing, it's not going to be like that.

Editors note: This footage is from a pre-alpha build of Socom 4 -- this is not the final version.

Game developers aren't stupid. Yes they want to get their slice of Nintendo's cash-pie, but Naughty Dog aren't going to release a patch for Uncharted 2 where Nathan Drake has to throw Flynn's head through a hoop several times in order to win the love of his EyePet so they can go bowling together. This brings me back to my point about all those sports and family games. Yes, there will be shovelware, but just ignore it. It's as simple as that. It's like going to the movies. If you see a trailer for a movie about something you don't care about, you don't go onto a forum and rage about how this movie will suck, and then go buy a ticket so you can rage about it some more. You simply don't go to see that movie.

All in all, think of Playstation Move as an alternate control scheme for the games you love, because that's what it is. You wont have to dance while playing Uncharted 3, and you wont have to act like a wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man while playing Call of Duty: World of Warfare. You will only have to do those things for the games you're not interested in, so why care? Personally I can see playing LittleBigPlanet, using Move to piss of my friends a hell of a lot of fun.

So, that's my rant over. I'm not saying Move will be amazing, but I just don't like how people are already writing it off. Give it a chance.

When you mention the PS3 and the PS2, they're both from the same company, so why would it be a clone? PS3 and PS2 have a few details changed, but the clone is the "slim" part of Playstation.

Even though it might be different, the whole concept is basically Nintendo's, I don't mean to be a pain but I really think Nintendo should actually do something about it, after all, aren't all Nintendo products Copyright protected?

Now I'm not a fanboy, I own both, a PS3 and a Wii, but when it comes to something like this, there is actually no need.

this is a reply to Dana. Just thought i would point out a small fact, that the PS3 came out before the Wii and that since the release date the PS3 has had Sixaxis control. Which has twice as many movements that the Wii, so actually its Sonys concept that Nintendo took a step further and made it the main control interface. So Sony should actually do something about Nintendo and Sixaxis is copyrighted. Just thought i would point that out.
