Switching Devices

The iPhone 4 is scheduled for a release in 17 other countries in about a weeks time, which is when I shall be getting my hands on one.

So, to prepare for the switch from my current iPod Touch, I'm going to take this opportunity to outline some simple steps to help you swap your content to the new device.

Note: This information is aimed at iPod/iPhone users who use a Mac

  1. Take screenshots of all your home screens so that you have an image displaying the arrangement of all your app icons and folder contents. This is going to help you organise your apps later on when you sync them to the new device. You can do this by holding the home button and quickly pressing the sleep/wake button.
  2. Back-up the devices content by syncing it with your itunes library. Doing this will make sure all calendar events, contact info, notes and pictures are transferred to your Mac ready for the new device.
  3. In this step, ensure you import the screenshots and photos from your camera role into your iPhoto library
  4. Sync the new device with your itunes library and go through all settings to make sure you sync all your previously backed-up content.
  5. The screenshots you took earlier can now be used to organise you apps and re-create all your old folders. You can also import any old pictures that you had on your camera role.
  6. Once you have all your content on the new device, your left to go through the settings and customise the device to your preferences.

It's always handy to make a bit of a plan when switching devices to ensure you don't lose any precious content. Going through these basic steps is going to make switch devices a lot easier and less time consuming.
