Stocky aims to revamp stock photography…
Search Google for “stock photography” and you will get an infinite list of results (about 66,000,000, to be precise). There’s plenty of sites trying to make money off the work of stock photographers and, as well as that, there seems to be no shortage to sites and blogs that seek out the “stockiest” images, despite them all having the appearance of 1990s clip-art. Getting hold of truly good images is like finding a needle in a haystack, requiring a lengthy search through Flickr,DeviantArt, and other sites not originally designed to provide stock photographs.
But look no further, Stocky aims to bridge the gap between quality content and traditional stock photography… but right now it’s only a project on Kickstarter.
The idea seems to be that all creative media could be exchanged freely and collaboratively in an open, engaging environment. Their focus isn’t solely photography; if the project ever materialises, it’d also incorporate video, vectors, audio samples, design templates, fonts, and just about anything else that an artist/designer could create and hope to share. So… if you’re an avid user of theShare and Share Alike type of IP licensing, which many art students are today, then you might be interested in a new service like this!
The project was posted to Kickstarter just over a week ago, but sadly has yet to receive any notable pledges. It’s at under $150 sadly, which is quite a distance from their $5000 goal. In case you want to pledge, the deadline is July 28 and no funding will go to the project if the goal isn’t met by then. It’d certainly be a shame as it’s different from all the others, like StockXchange, because it isn’t medium restrictive and allows collaboration (e.g. alternate version uploads by different artists/designers).
