September 1st Apple Media Event Recap

This article was originally posted at http://techbytez.net/blog/september-1st-apple-media-event-recap

Finally! Today Apple went through the September 1st media event. Here Apple discussed many things. As usual, in the beginning, Jobs spoke about some numbers. After that, he went on to iOS. iOS 4.1 will be coming next week. This will add Game Center and fix many bugs in iOS 4.0, including proximity issues and crashes. He also surprisingly gave a sneak preview of iOS 4.2. iOS 4.2 will bring iOS 4 to the iPad. This also includes wireless printing. I am glad they are adding all the neat features of iOS 4 to the iPad. I really want multitasking included as my brother has an iPad and he lets me use it daily. I find myself wanting to watch a movie on Netflix and surf the web at the same time. Once multitasking comes to the iPad, I will be able to travel with it instead of my MacBook. Those are just a few exciting iOS updates (by the way all of these updates are free).

After the iOS updates, Apple further discussed a bit more numbers. Then he went on to the star of the event, iPods. Steve Jobs explained that every iPod was getting an update in design. The new iPod Shuffle now has buttons again, close to what the second generation had. It is a bit thinner than the second generation, although it includes many more features. Now you have voiceover, genius mixes, and playlists. These are very exciting for some users that enjoy the iPod Shuffle. The new Shuffle still has a clip and can be picked up for $49 next week in a variety of colors.

After discussing the Shuffle, Jobs moved on the Nano. Again, with a full redesign, the new Nano has a 1.5″ multi-touch screen. The new Nano looks most close to the leaked images found. You can view the gallery of photos on Apple’s website. The Nano now looks more like the Shuffle, as it includes a clip. The multi-touch touchscreen is also very unique, because you can rotate the screen any which way. The interface kind of looks like iOS but a skimmed version. The Nano has many less features than iOS 4, making it the Nano. I really fell that Apple shorted you on the Nano this time, leaving without a microphone, video camera, and some extra applications like pre-loaded games. This can be picked up in two different models, priced a little high for what you are really getting. The new Nano comes in 8gb and 16gb models, following $149 and $179 price tags, respectively. I really want to see what the Nano turns into next year, as I see a great amount of space to grow.

The most popular iPod yet, the iPod Touch, was next updated. The new iPod Touch features a thinner body and two cameras. Apple showed us what we wanted, and now included a front, VGA camera for FaceTime support, and a back, HD camera for pictures and video. The pictures, as I forgot to mention, now will be able to utilize Apple's integration of HDR, an update included in iOS 4.1. The new iPod Touch also sports a Retina display. Finally, topping off the iPod Touch goodness, this will also support Game Center. The new iPod Touch “is the iPhone without the phone”. The new iPod Touch comes in 8, 32, and 64gb models, following $229, $299, and $399 price tags, respectively. The iPod Touch is now complete, and Apple hit a home run this time.

In the mix of updates, iTunes 10 was also released. It now has a new logo, which ditches the disk. It also now has Apple’s own music social network, Ping, included. This is great for hardcore iTunes users. The update is available today. I don’t want to spend too much on the topic, so go, download, and check it out yourself!

With all Apple media events, there is one more thing. This time, its one more hobby. The Apple TV was updated today. The new Apple TV sports many new features, including an all new design. Its basically a black box with the rounded measurements 4″x4″x1″. This is 1/4 the size of the previous Apple TV. The new Apple TV is “silent, cool, and tiny.” It includes only rentals, that actually stream to the Apple TV. Apple is striving for all of these rentals to be in HD. There is no syncing, just streaming. You can rent HD TV shows for a low price of $.99 and rent just released HD movies for $4.99. These are great prices for this streaming only device. Finally, it has Netflix support, something many people really wanted. I am proud to say that I am buying the Apple TV as it has everything I could ask for right now. At a price tag of $99, its unbeatable!

The 2010 Apple Media Event really was revolutionary. I hope you enjoyed these pleasurable updates.
