Mac App Review & Overview: The Hit List

Do you ever wish that you could get rid of all those little thoughts and to-do's out of your head and into a reliable place to clear out your mind? If so, then The Hit List is just for you!

The Hit List by The Potion Factory is a Mac-exclusive GTD app very much like Things and OmniFocus. GTD stands for Getting Things Done which is a stress-free productivity method created by David Allen. Many people have followed this technique causing it to be quite popular these last few years.

---

One of The Hit List's major characteristics is its strikingly aesthetic and elegant look, the UI has clearly had a lot of thought put into it. The notepad feel and mouth-watering tabs and buttons are just ravishing and a delight to look at. It’s definitely by far one of the best-looking apps available at the moment for the Mac.

Now onto the features: The Hit List is an extremely flexible app that can fit to nearly anyone's liking. Unlike many other GTD apps, you can create your own lists with folders and even sub-folders. This allows you to have separate folders for work, home and any other are you can think of. For example, your work folder could have separate lists for presentations, projects, reports, etc. Another feature that could be very beneficial to people are the smart folders. You can create a smart folder to only display tasks with certain keywords or to exclude to-do’s with a low priority.

This brings me onto the tasks and creating them. A task in The Hit List consists of a priority number to define importance (from 1 to 9), the actual task text, tags, and a due/start column. But before I continue any further, you must know that this app is very centered around the keyboard, nearly the whole app can be controlled with a few key strokes. This increases your workflow because you no longer need to continuously switch from mouse to keyboard. But for those of you who are mouse-lovers, don’t fret, you can work through the app with a mouse as well. An interesting example how the keyboard is used in this app is for writing in a date. Instead of selecting a day, you can just type a certain letter; typing “T”, for example, will set the date to today.

In this program, tags are used extensively and handled surprisingly well. You can organize and view entire lists by tags if you wanted to! Another intelligent aspect of this app is that while you type in tags, it’ll start to auto-complete it for you. It does this by looking at what you wrote in the task and match it with other to-do’s that contain similar keywords (it basically grabs information from your other lists to help you write up the current task).

---

However, The Hit List doesn't come without its faults. First of all, you can’t do a worldwide search of all your tasks, it only does a search of the list you’re currently in. But one of the most troubling things about this application is the developer. He does not stay in contact with his users and has failed to keep people up to date as to why the iPhone counterpart app is taking a long time to release and why the beta date of the desktop version is continuously getting an expiring beta date.

Thanks for reading this brief review and overview of The Hit List; please watch the video review for the complete and in-depth version.

The Hit List is currently $49.95, but will go up in price when fully released.
