Call of Duty: Black Ops – Multiplayer Recap

After Treyarch held a special event for the guys over at Inside Xbox, I thought it would a good idea to recap what they revealed. Firstly though, for those of you who haven’t watched the video that Inside Xbox released here it is:

There are plenty of new features shown that we haven’t seen before. Treyarch have announced some new kill streak bonuses for those who get up to an 11 kill streak.

3 Kills – Spy Plane
3 – RC-XD (RC bomb)
4 – Counter Spy Plane
4 – SAM Turret
5 – Care Package
5 – Napalm Strike
6 – Sentry Gun
6 – Mortar Team
7 – Attack Helicopter
7 – Valkyrie Rockets
8 – Blackbird
8 – ‘Rolling Thunder’
9 – Chopper Gunner
11 – Attack Dogs
11 – Gunship

Some new rewards are unveiled here that we haven’t seen before such as the Napalm Strike and the RC-XD, which were seen in the video above. Some of you might be pleased to see a return of the attack dogs that were previously seen in Treyarch’s World at War, or Call of Duty 5.

Something completely new to the Call of Duty games that has been added is a credits system, COD points. These are earned as you play online for completing various challenges called Contracts. These credits can then be spent in-game to unlock new weapons and add-ons.

Another new feature is a wager match system implemented into the online multiplayer side of the game. Players can gamble COD points that they have earned and then the top three winners in a match split the winners. Three new game modes have been introduced where players can wager points. These are:

One in the Chamber — Players will start with pistols only, one bullet, and three lives. If you kill someone you get a bullet.

Sticks and Stones — Players start with a crossbow and a ballistic knife, and a tomahawk. If a player is killed with a tomahawk they go bankrupted.

Gun Game — All players start with pistol, and every kill gives you a better weapon. First one to progress through the weapons wins. If you get knifed you get reset a level.
Sharp Shooter — All players start with the same randomly selected weapon. Weapons cycle, but everyone has the same weapon.

Another new feature that Treyarch have added to Black Ops is a weapons customization feature. As the video above shows, players can customize their weapons by adding different logos and sprays similar to how you can customize your Master Chief in Halo 3’s online play.

New game modes have been added, one that I’m looking forward to is Gun Game. Those of you who have played games like Counter Strike: Source should know how this is going to be played. Every player starts off with a particular pistol then each time you get a kill you advance to another gun. Players have to make their way through a variety of weapons including; shotguns, assault rifles, snipers, knives and rocket launchers. The game finishes once one player has worked their way through all 20 weapons.

Lastly for now, another new feature that has been added into Black Ops is Theatre Mode. This allows players to record their games and then afterwards go back, watch again and even edit clips of in-game action. No doubt this will increase the number of videos on YouTube of players creating their own Machinima. All your games from the past 7 days are saved automatically for you to go back to at any time, watch again or edit. Kills are marked on the timeline of the video; a green line for your kills and a red line for your deaths. This allows you to quickly skip to perhaps the more exciting moments of your match or to see how you died and possibly ways for you to improve.

So for now these seem to be some exiciting new features that I know I’m looking forward to. No word of zombies though; perhaps it’ll just be a launch day surprise. We’ll have to wait and see.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is released later this year, November 9, 2010 in Europe on PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii & Nintendo DS.

It’s a film called Hungry for You and it’s in pre-production now. I play the lead vampire. I didn’t want to be a vampire but was forced into it so I’m struggling with my vampire powers and not wanting to turn the girl I love into a vampire. The script is really great and has a wonderful storyline. It’s been fun. The creator, Linda Andersson, has a really cool comic strip of Hungry for You that she is going to release soon. It’s sort of a teaser and a way to start the marketing for the project in a bigger level.
