A New Name for Something We See Everyday

Today I would like to discuss with you a new theory I came up with. As we all know, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and ect. have all had those moments when they're offline because they have a huge overload in traffic. I have come up with a name for these rough patches that I would like to share with you.

When a start-up first starts, it thinks about broad things like the features, designs, hosting, a name... What it doesn't think about is how many users it will have. The start-ups always hope they will have hundreds, thousands, maybe even millions of users, but they never are truly prepared for it. They are challenged with the fact that the way the build there site might take a lot of space and resource usage. Then they will probably face downtime while they rapidly try to scale for the usage/users. Well, I like to call this "The Stretch Mark Effect". The exact definition I have come up with is: When websites expand quicker than they can scale for, or don't scale according to the user base they have, and face downtime due to availability.
