App Review: Flipside

I was recently fortunate enough to get into contact with @moonjhm, the developer of a cool flash card app called Flipside. I contacted them to do a review and also received some promo codes to give away (details later on in the post)!

Usability:

I would like to start of by saying that Flipside has a slightly odd UI, while the main screen is in landscape, the moment you start to create a stack of cards, it takes you into a forced portrait mode. Another thing that I found was a little bit strange was that it was not a seamless process to add a new card to an already existing stack. It is a very convoluted process in which you have to go back and forth a couple of times. This was a bit tedious for me as I wanted to quickly enter many cards without delay, and it would have been much easier if there was a button to do this while creating a new card.

Although this is the case, there are a few unique features which make up for this minor flaw. This is the process to move cards from one stack to another. It is just like moving emails into a folder in the mail app. You simply click move, and choose which stack to move it into. Another great feature which this app offers is the ability to mark cards. This makes it completely fluid to skip over cards which you have already learned, and saved me A LOT of time! Both these features are very well thought out, and implemented just as Apple would (I imagine).

Aesthetics:

The app overall is very good looking, and is again, reminiscent of something that Apple would do. In fact, I find that the visual appeal of the app is so much superior to its competition, that I would buy Flipside, just for that.

Recommendation:

Flipside for iPhone and iPod touch is offered for a mere 99¢ on the App Store. This is a very good price when compared to many of their competition, which offer their apps from $1.99 to $4.99. When looking at the exclusive features offered in this app, 99¢ is more than just a bargain.

Compared to some other flashcard apps on the App Store, they don’t offer the same sort of visual appeal nor some of the more advanced features, making this one of the best flashcard apps on the App Store, not only for this price but, overall! I would recommend this app for anyone looking for a flashcard app.

There is also an update coming up for the app, which will allow you to download pre-made stacks! In addition there is an iPad app, which I will review soon!

Promo Codes:

I have a couple of promo codes given to me by the developer of the app. In order to win a copy of the app, you have to follow me on twitter (@tanaymodi1) and tweet this “@tanaymodi1 can I have a copy of the #insane #flashcard app, #Flipside in ur #giveaway?”. The winners for the competition will be announced on Friday (28th of Jan 2011).
