My MacBook Theory

Now, before I start I just want to say that this is simply my thoughts. I am not saying that this is what Apple should or will do, just what I consider to be a likely route for them to take in the future.

So, as well all know, several months ago Apple removed the classic white polycarbonate MacBook from its line-up of notebook computers, despite it still being available from some third party retailers such as Amazon. I think that Apple has a very good reason to do this which I will explain in this article.

Recently we have seen Apple really pushing forward the MacBook Air, updating it twice in the space of a year after a break of almost two years – a lifetime in terms of notebook upgrades. Surely there is something to be seen here. When Apple most recently updated the Air it came at the same time as the launch of Mac OS X Lion and, unfortunately, the death of the MacBook.

So why would Apple do this? Why would they kill off what some people saw as their ‘flagship’ notebook?

I think that Apple is, once again, planning to do something revolutionary. I think that before long (I expect this to happen within a year of writing this article) Apple will release a new notebook that will simply be called the MacBook. But, this will not be the same MacBook as we are used to, oh no. This will be quite possibly one of the thinnest and most powerful notebook computers in the world. It will take the incredibly desirable form factor of the MacBook Air and combine it together with the power, performance and specs of the MacBook Pro. I would imagine Apple to offer this device in 11”, 13”, 15” and 17” screen sizes so that all types of users were satisfied. The new notebook will offer SSD’s of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB capacities and Apple would recommend the purchase of a Thunderbolt external hard drive if you wanted more storage.

So, then, why would Apple kill off the MacBook? I think that it is simply to make room for this new device and when they launch it, the tables will be turned; only the MacBook will be available to buy and both the Air and Pro will be essentially killed off due to the nature of the new notebook.

As I said at the beginning, this is only an idea that I have but I personally think that this would be a great product for Apple to release and, I don’t know about you, but with all the current rumours of 15” MacBook Airs and a refresh to both the Air and Pro, this seems to be as likely a scenario as any!
