What do you Expect in iOS 5?

Every year, Apple comes out with a new operating system for iPhones, iPods, and iPads. Up next is iOS 5. iOS 4 had huge improvements; FaceTime, folders for your apps, backgrounds (for behind the apps), multitasking, and a few more features. Now, the things in this post are possibilities, but I have no idea what will be in iOS 5. Enjoy.

  • Better multitasking. When iOS 4 was released, they made multitasking possible. It's a great add-on, but while multitasking certain apps, it can drain battery life. Also, after seeing WebOS's multitasking, with the "cards" and swiping up to end an app, we realize that Apple needs to improve the multitasking function to keep up with other mobile operating systems. Maybe something like Mac's Expose?
  • Push notifications for email. Not many people think of this, and it may not be a big deal. But we still can't have push notifications for IMAP email accounts besides Yahoo, and MobileMe.
  • OTA (Over the Air) syncing and updates. There have been many rumors about OTA updates. I think it is a great idea, and should've been developed a while ago. I mean come on, the first Palm PDA's from the early 2000's used dock connectors, can't we move on? Also, how about OTA syncing? I think it all sounds great!
  • New push notifications. Let’s face it, push notifications on the iPhone suck. They get in the way while you are using your device, and really are not the best compared to iOS's competitor. Ever since launch, Android has had their notification bar at the top of the screen, and you simply hold and swipe down to revile all of your notifications for text messages, emails, missed calls, and much more. Even though I love the way Android is going with their notification system, even they could make improvements. I think that while you are in an app, you shouldn't get an annoying popup saying something, rather the bar at the top of the screen should flash once to tell you that you have a notification. Then, you could tap the bar or do some kind of gesture to revile the notification(s). This is just an idea, I'm sure Apple will think of something good.
  • More touch gestures. "Did you know that the iPhone has multi-touch support?" Woh, I never knew. As simple as it is, we need more touch gestures! This is especially important for the iPad, due to its large screen. Come on Apple, almost every popular mobile phone operating system already has pinch-to-zoom.
  • Lockscreen widgets, or shortcuts. "Slide to unlock." The same thing, for 4 iOS versions. I think it’s time to change things up a little, Apple. Maybe some widgets or shortcuts to important things like calendar, or camera?
  • Available for ALL devices. iPod touches, iPads, iPhones... they're all expensive devices, why not make it available for all devices, new or old. Maybe just tweak it up a little for the older devices, like the iPhone 3G, and iPod touch 2nd Generation. Do something similar like what you did in iOS 4, by removing backgrounds and multitasking.
  • Think of something new. iPods, iPhones, iPads... they're all great devices. But the iPhone is four years old. Don’t get me wrong, there has been many changes throughout the years, every iOS has something big that’s new, I'm sure something great will happen.

Very good article enjoyed the read, I agree with everything you say and hope some if not all of the ideas are implemented in the next OS

You can get push email for gmail as well. Just need to set it up as Microsoft Exchange.
