Why is Facebook Safe?

On February 4, 2004, the world changed forever. Sure, there was MySpace and all sorts of social networking sites, but that day something changed. Facebook was born. Some use it for their business, others to play cheesy games at work. Either way, there is not a person around that has not at least heard the word, Facebook.

See, in July 2011 the active amount of users on Facebook was 750 million. For comparison purposes, MySpace had 50 million. Facebook has over two times as many people who live in the United States that log on as active users every month.

The question is, do people like Facebook? In the past year almost every design update Facebook has made has been frowned upon. Ring a bell? Take the newest chat bar for example. Took a little bit for Facebook to fix it right? The thing is, people want to be consistent. Basically, if everyone is already on Facebook then you could never get everyone to move their accounts to another social network. What is happening is Facebook is monopolizing the social networking industry. This is the same way AT&T monopolized the iPhone until this year, or how eBay can charge whatever fees they want. These sites are unique, not entirely because of their features, because of their user base. Nobody wants to make that big of a migration.

In conclusion, Facebook averages 750 million active users each month. I doubt 750 million users are going to all decide to switch to Google+ next week. Whether we like it or not, Facebook is going to be around for a while, so get used to it.
