iPhone 4S Jailbreaking Rant

As I'm sure you know by now, Apple's newest line of iOS devices have been jailbroken. A lot of people have been waiting for this for a long time. I decided to give jail breaking a shot on my iPhone 4S, and all I can say is that I'm glad to be back on official Apple software. This video explains why.

With that said, there are definitely some things that I liked about being jailbroken. Here are some of my favorite features:

  • UI Tweaks
    •     Lock Screen notifications/Notification Center
    •     Apps and features in Notification Center
  • BiteSMS
  • More customization options
    •     System sounds
    •     Custom icons/sliders
    •     Custom keyboards
    •     Custom Gestures

I really loved being able to add custom sounds to my UI. I also loved being able to reply to text messages from within another application, thanks to BiteSMS. I also installed other tweaks that made notification center much more functional by being able to enable/disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, among other things.

With that said, I believe that the cons outweigh the pros when it comes to jail breaking. Here are the things that bothered me most about the jailbreak:

  • Bugs/glitches
  • Decreased security
  • Most cool and useful tweaks cost money
  • It's not the experience Apple wants you to have

I noticed that installing tweaks made the phone very unstable. I can't even count the number of times the phone either froze or "re-sprung" due to one of the tweaks crashing. I'm also not comfortable with paying for the more useful apps in Cydia. Apps that aren't polished and may not even be updated for future iOS versions simply aren't worth my money. I strongly believe that if you're willing to develop apps or tweaks for Cydia that you should be willing to do it for free. In my opinion, it's how the jailbreaking scene should be.

In the end, I ended up returning to official Apple software within two days. I simply couldn't stand my phone no longer being stable. If this was an iPod Touch, then I wouldn't mind as much because an iPod Touch wouldn't be my main source of communication with friends and family. I need a phone that works. I refuse to have a phone that crashes multiple times during the day. I bought an iPhone because I know it has a great user experience. That will always be more important to me than a few cool tweaks.

What do you guys think? Will you be jail breaking in the future? Have you tried it, and if so, how did you like it! Be sure to let me know on YouTube and Twitter.
