Is iOS Outdated?

by Chrissy Giglio

Since the world of mobile devices is constantly changing and improving, it makes sense that things sometimes become quickly outdated. You wouldn’t want to voluntarily be using something old, if you could be using something new. Apple is viewed as quite possibly the most innovative company that is always offering the newest and most advanced products. The question at hand though is whether or not Apple’s iOS looks are outdated compared to other mobile device formats.

In 2007 we were graced with the presence of this mobile wonder that we’ve embraced in our lives. In the years that we’ve known the iPhone, we haven’t seen much of a change in appearance of the operating system. Despite the competition in the market, the iPhone is still selling in large quantities. So does the general public notice this outdated appearance or would only a tech enthusiast point it out?

The actual guts of this operating system have changed and improved greatly over the past five years. These internal improvements allow for changes to occur to the physical appearance of the system as well. Despite the fact that changes can be made, they simply haven’t been. The processing power of the phone has increased, which would enable the iOS to take advantage of new features.

The current model of the iPhone, compared to the original, has many differences such as; a different screen size, better screen resolution and also the app store has been added. With all of these advancements, one would think that the operating system would see a face lift as well. Especially since Apples competition (Android and Windows) are showcasing glitzier systems.

The sales of the phone prove that people are still buying them and apparently not seeing any issues or flaws in the mobile device. The more simple approach that Apple has is not as “modernized” as Androids perhaps, but some people would prefer to have a more simple and usable product. The almost cult-like following of Apple products also proves that its users like the way it is and perhaps believe the cliché of “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.”

In October it was announced that the Senior Vice President of iOS Software, Scott Forstall, was going to be leaving the company. The changes in the company may allow room for change to take place within the system. With somebody else in charge of running iOS there is room for growth and new ideas to infiltrate the already existing system.

The debate of whether or not iOS seems outdated seems to be more of a personal choice than a factual one. A matter of preference comes into play when deciding which phone to purchase, and the operating system is definitely a factor that is included in the decision making process.
