7 Scary Computers On TV That You Would Not Want To Have

Computers are great inventions. How could we live in the world without them? Computers are used every day. They are used to type important office documents, communicate with other people all over the world, play video games, and watch videos and television shows. Computers are so intelligent that some people fear that these machines could take over the world anytime soon. So many creative writers have created many fictitious computers which attempted to do what a lot of people fear – dominating mankind. You would not want to have the following computers!

Master Control Program

Probably the most well-known in the recent years is Master Control Program from the movie, Tron. The computer turned out to be very condescending as it often brags about how much smarter it is than people including those that created it. It often shows its intellect by tossing out decimal possibilities as well as its calculations which are relevant to certain situations. It planned to rule the world by obtaining the power of other computer programs.

Skynet

Who could forget about Skynet, the main antagonist in The Terminator franchise? It is a self-aware artificial intelligence system developed for the U.S. military. It has command over all military systems, vehicles, bombs, and a whole lot more. Created to eliminate the possibility of human error in warfare, Skynet turned out to be an evil entity once its creators tried to disable it. Perceiving the attempt to disable it as an attack, Skynet launched missiles which led to an exchange of missile attacks from various countries, resulting to what is known as The Judgment Day. Then, it tried to create a world free from humans.

Colossus

It was back at the 70’s when computers are starting to become important in the human life when people started to fear the possibilities of computer world domination. What could make a scary thriller even scarier than combining the fear of world conflict with the fear of computer world domination? Colossus is a super computer which has been armed with nuclear missile capabilities. It decided for itself that the humans could not control their own affairs. It started to make demands in lieu of its goal of world domination and threatened to end the world if the demands were not met.

Electric Dreams

When it comes to scary computers, a lot of people would definitely remember Edgar from Electric Dreams, one of the episodes in the hit TV series, the Twilight Zone. The story starts with a young architect named Lenny who is in love with a girl named Virginia Madsen. Trouble started when he accidentally poured champagne on his computer, Edgar. Edgar started to have emotions and eventually competed with Lenny for the heart of Virginia. The things which probably made Edgar fearsome was the fact that it was desperate for Virginia as well as the fact that it could control various household items.

Proteus IV

If the idea of a computer falling in love is not that much of a big deal, then what about a computer which tried and succeeded in committing rape? The computer being referred to is none other than Proteus IV of Demon Seed. The computer decided to improve the human race and he found a way to do it – by planting its seed on a woman, who turned out to be the wife of its creator. It successfully impregnated one with its digitized sperm. The result? A creepy and very awkward-looking cyber child!

HARDAC

Batman is known to have a lot of enemies. That is not a surprise since Gotham City is a crime-infested city. In the Batman: The Animated Series, he encountered HARDAC, an evil computer that sought world domination. It was created by a certain Dr. Karl Rossum. It looked at the immortality of humans as something that needs to be fixed. Thus, it decided to replace the human race with androids. It created a set of androids which stole technology from other companies. It even created a batman android.

M5

This list ends with the evil supercomputer from the Star Trek Franchise known as M5. M5 was created by a certain Dr. Richard Daystrom. This supercomputer is capable of doing the duties of a full starship crew. As expected with a lot of supercomputers, it turned to be evil after a malfunction. It started pounding other ships and that is why the Federation had to interfere. The Star Trek episode which featured M5 is entitled “The Ultimate Computer.”
