This Week in Sports 2010: Week 1

This is going to be a new series in which I look at some of the biggest stories of the week, every week, in the year of 2010. This week, the top stories seemed to be the NFL Playoffs, College Basketball upsets, and the College Football BCS bowl games.

The Monday after the regular season ends in the NFL is referred to as "Black Monday" because it is usually the day all the firings take place. The Seahawks, the Redskins, The Bills, and the Raiders are all going coach hunting. The Hawks are most likely going to sign Pete Carroll, the Skins have now signed former Bronco coach Mike Shanahan, and former Steeler head coach Bill Cower seems to be the target of the Bills. As for the 12 teams in the postseason, this is what they have been working for all season. There were 3 rematches from last Sunday's regular season finale, and so far, they have turned out the same way. The Bengals got worked against the Jets yesterday, as they did last Sunday. The Eagles were embarrassed by the Boys again. The last rematch left is Cardinals taking on the Packers. I have a feeling that will turn out the same way as well. The most interesting matchup to me is Ravens-Patriots. The Raven's defense against the Welker-less Pats is looking good to me. The relentless running game of the Ravens against the "so-so" defense of the Patriots also looks in the Ravens favor. But never count out the Patriots. They have a quarterback that won't give up and can lead furious comebacks.

This week in College Basketball was one of the worst for me, as my #14 New Mexico Lobos lost TWICE. They will definitely drop out of the top 20, if not drop out of the rankings period. Duke was upset by Georgia Tech yesterday, and the #4 Boilermakers of Purdue were beat by Wisconsin. #6 Villinova barely got out against Marquette as they win at home by 2. That seems like it has been the story of Marquette all season. #8 West Virginia lost by 2 at Notre Dame and #16 Mississippi falls to Mississippi State. The game of the week was probably #12 Georgetown hosted #13 UConn. Georgetown was down 19, and came away with a 3 point win led by Austin Freeman who scored 28 in the second half and finished the game with 33 points. When the rankings come out on Monday, there is going to be some real chaos.

The biggest story of the week might have been Colt McCoy leaving the BCS National Championship game with a shoulder injury, leaving Texas freshman Garett Gilbert, who had thrown 26 passes all season, to step in to the biggest game of the college football season. May i remind you he is a true freshman, taking on the best team in the nation in Alabama. Texas was down 18 at the half after a disastrous final play of the half. But UT came out in the second half with passion, rallying behind their freshman QB. They cut the Bama lead to 3, 21-24. But their rally came to a crash, as their inexperienced QB fumbled on his own 3 yard line, setting up what would be the "nail in the coffin" touchdown run by Mark Ingram. Alabama won the title and made Colt McCoy's  last collegiate game hell. Texas did have a something good come out of this game. They got to see Garett Gilbert really grow up, and got a glimpse of Texas football's future. Their future looks bright.

Well those were the 3 biggest stories in my opinion. I hope you all liked this introduction to this new series!
