The Touch-Screen Cell Phone War
So we all know that phone companies are pumping out more and more touch-screen cell phones. Funny thing is, this didn't start happening until recently (the past year and a half or so). The first ever touch-screen cell phone was the Palm (I believe), it quickly became the top notch business phone. Years later the BlackBerry was built, and that became the new most used business phone. And to this day the BlackBerry Curve is the number one SmartPhone. BUT, the BlackBerry is the Number One BUSINESS SmartPhone, what is the Number One Touch-Screen SmartPhone? The iPhone 3G of course! Obviously, the iPhone 3G is on AT&T, but Verizon Wireless still claims to hold the best touch-screen phones on the market. They do seem to have the most touch-screen phones, but definitely NOT the best. Here is the list of the top 3 best-selling Touch-Screen SmartPhones (according to the data from the NPD Group):
1. Apple iPhone 3G-AT&T
2. BlackBerry Storm-Verizon Wireless
3. Google Android-T-Mobile
The LG Voyager (from Verizon Wireless of course) was supposed to be the first iPhone killer. About a month after the iPhone released, the Voyager was created....literally. Apple came out and murdered all other touch-screen phones on their first shot. Now everyone should already know how Verizon TRIES to jump onto the band-wagon of other companies' success (T-Mobile and the My Faves, verizon now has a top 5 unlimited calling feature also, AT&T with top 3G service, verizon some how claims to have the largest 3G network all of the sudden, AT&T teamed up with Cingular, and now Verizon has teamed up with Alltel). So after Verizon saw how amazing the iPhone was doing with their touch-screen device, they NEEDED to have something better. So in what seemed like a month's time, Verizon released the LG Voyager. It has a cheap Touch-Screen (not even CLOSE to the iPhone's) and they thought by slapping on a key-board, it would murder the iPhone with more features....not quite. The Voyager isn't even on the top 3 list of touch-screen phones. Verizon obviously doesn't like to take their time developing things, and thats why most of their phones are imitations of other companies' work. The only good touch screen phone Verizon has is the BlackBerry Storm, why?
BlackBerry built it, and they took their time, you can easily tell, from the rumors of it, ads, and overall design. Apple, took their time designing the iPhone, and because of that it gave them number one. Google, took their time designing the Android, result, number three on top touch-screen phones. So, what do you guys think? Is Verizon Wireless the band-wagon jumper? Do they pump out phones just to say they have something even better than the original version? My answer, yes to both questions, and I think it'll continue to be that way until Verizon finally decides to sit down, and actually take the time out of bull-shitting people and design a good phone. So until Verizon grows some patience, Apple (with AT&T), BlackBerry (verizon's only good touch-screen phone), and Google (with T-Mobile) will continue to dominate the touch-screen cell phone market. I think first off, it is a mistake to blame Verizon for the Voyager, after all LG made it. Verizon just provides the service, that would be like blaming AT&T for making the iPhone. You can't say how Verizon is sucking at making phones, and then compare it to Blackberry making the Storm, its not fair, you have to compare LG, Apple, Blackberry, etc. Not the carrier. You have to blame the manufacturer. The Voyager was the first iPhone killer, until the iPhone 3G and the App Store came out, the Voyager pretty much had it beat. Yes the touch screen on the iPhone was better, but the feature of the Voyager were better. MMS, video recording and 3G service, to name a couple. To be honest, LG was planning the Voyager long before the iPhone had been released at all, however Apple got the iPhone out first.
Also, Verizon does have the best 3G coverage, no doubt about it, AT&T saying they have the top or best 3G Service, is like a subliminal message, it makes it sound #1 but it is only stating opinions, not facts. Apple first went to Verizon with the iPhone, they said "Hey, we got this phone, we got the OS, we just need the #1 carrier now to complete it, we plan to launch and App Store, etc.." Verizon, of course being the controlling company they are, says "Sure we will take it, but let us stamp Verizon all over the phone, put our own OS, and our own App Store (very crappy App Store) on it." of course Apple says no, goes to AT&T and then AT&T lets Apple do what they want, and it paid off. Now Verizon looks like a tool for turning this huge offer down, they see what it could of done for them, and now they are in talks with Apple about bring the phone or some other device to Verizon.
For your points of Verizon being a band-wagon jumper and coming out with something that they say is better you have to look at it this way: The iPhone, Blackberry Storm and Google Android phones are all only on one carrier. iPhone has AT&T, the Storm has Verizon and the Android has T-Mobile. So, people have to switch to get these phones, since (legally) they are only on one carrier. Yet, LG makes phones for Verizon, then changes it slightly and puts that phone on Sprint, then changes it a little and puts it on AT&T. So people do not need to switch to get these phones, they all have the save features, just a different carrier, that how the mobile industry is set-up.
My father has the Storm, being a business man, and the only reason the Storm is at the top is because it is new, and business men will buy any new BlackBerry. They hear its the first with a touch screen, they say "Oh, it must be a competitor of the iPhone, I love my BlackBerry, I will just get this, have the best of both worlds (Touch Screen and BlackBerry)." However, the touch screen is weak, and honestly, Blackberry rushed the design of it, they should of made the touch screen better, my Dad, from using my iPod Touch, loves the touch screen on it, says it is a whole lot better then the Storms screen. So, since it is new, it is near the top, I bet, in a few months, it will die down, and people will go back to other BlackBerry's.
