App Review: Lie Detector
There are several apps in the App Store that seem practical, but are relatively useless. Earlier, I did a review for "Awesome Ball," an example of the aforementioned. There are a bevy of lie detector apps out there, and they just start to take up space. However, you'd be SHOCKED to find out that the only decent lie detector app is PAID.
Value:
This is definitely the best lie detector app out there. At $.99, it is definitely one of the "more expensive" apps. However, it's really only $.99 for iPhone users. If you have an iPod touch, you'll need to cough up another $10 or so to buy an external microphone compatible with this app. Overall, however, I can say that the entertainment value really exceeds the monetary value.
Premise:
Most other lie detector apps just have a question that you answer while holding your thumb on your screen as it "detects a lie." (Usually, they always say it IS a lie you tell) Lie Detector, itself, really has more to it than that. First, you enter [a person's] gender, name, age, hair color, and a final question of your choice for [a person] to answer. The first four questions are meant to determine the person's average vocal frequency when they tell the truth. The final question uses the earlier analysis to determine if the change in frequency is great enough to detect the lie.
Impressions:
Surprisingly, it really is accurate, and works well! Just beware: don't use this app in a heavily populated area, as background noise can influence the results. Also, you need to make sure that the person taking the test doesn't know that it measures vocal frequency. Otherwise, it's extremely easy to fool.
Overall, I give "Lie Detector" thumb's up if you have an iPhone. If you have an iPod touch 2G, really think about if you want to shell out the extra dough for a microphone. I did because I already had apps that were compatible with it.
