How to add a Gmail account to Microsoft Entourage and other E-mail programs

Okay this is my first blog post on thecreativeone.tv and I will try my best to write a quality article.

More and more people are using Gmail and some are not sure how to but want to access it in E-mail programs like Outlook, Apple Mail, Entourage, and many more. But most people don't know how so this tutorial is to teach you how.

First you need to ensure that your Gmail is set to allow IMAP connections. To do this sign into your gmail account at gmail.com and go to Settings. Then click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP. Go down to IMAP access and select Enable IMAP. This will now allow you to connect to gmail with IMAP which synchronizes folders and is a lot more powerful than POP3.

After that is done launch your E-mail program of choice. I will be explaining with Microsoft Entourage 2008 but the numbers you use and settings are the same throughout.

In Entourage click on Tools in the Menu Bar then select Accounts. Click New then in the Account type drop down box select IMAP. Then select an account name so you can identify it within Entourage. Then set the name you want shown in the receivers Inbox and type in your full E-mail Address. For Account ID it should just be your gmail username and nothing else. For IMAP Server put in: imap.gmail.com then type your password into the password box. Then Click "Click here for advanced receiving options" Check "This IMAP service requires a secure connection (SSL)" and "Override default IMAP port:" Then in the Box next to Override input 993 then close out that sub box. Then for SMTP server put in: smtp.gmail.com then once more click the advanced options. Check off everything and for SMTP port put in 587 and for authentication select "Use same settings as receiving mail server" Then click OK. That is all you need to do. To test it click Send/Receive and if nothing comes up go through a couple Inbox folders to make sure your looking in the right place. If nothing comes still ensure you typed the numbers in correctly.
