Essential iPhone Apps

When Steve Jobs announced the release of the iPhone 4 back in June, there were over 200,000 apps for the iPhone. Since that date, even more apps have been developed and approved giving users an enormous menu of choices on the app store.

I don’t know about you, but when I download a new game for example, you often play it just for a bit, or until you complete all the levels until it just becomes another square on your home screen, rarely to be used again. It’s a similar story with other productivity apps that contain basic functionalities and very little purpose.

Detailed below are a few apps that I’ve been using since I’ve had my iPhone which I feel haven’t lost their appeal and I continue to use or play to this date. Some of these apps may seem like obvious choices to you, some you may agree with and others you may not. But here is my list of favourite apps that any iPhone user should check-out.

Essential iPhone Apps:

  • Dropbox. This cloud based app allows you to upload your documents and files from your PC or Mac to the online server, creating a back-up which you can later access from your iPhone. From the iPhone client you can view your documents, add photos, videos and organise your dropbox with custom folders. The generous 2Gb of storage means you can keep your vital documents right in your pocket.
  • Angry Birds. This one is a bit of a no brainer really. This game is highly addictive and frequently gets updated with additional levels. It’s just one of those apps that doesn’t get old and can keep you entertained for hours. Unlike other games which you complete once and rarely play again, the developers of Angry Birds add new levels on a regular basis, continually adding to the users experience.
  • To-Do (Tomorrow). A few people disagree with this choice of to-do app, but the simplicity of To-Do Tomorrow makes it very quick and easy to input new to-dos and reminders. Other to-do apps require you to give your to-dos a due date, priority and category, making the whole experience very time consuming and tedious. To-Do (Tomorrow) is very basic, allowing you to create new to-dos just for today or easily bump them to tomorrow, because we all love to procrastinate.
  • Google. We all know and love Google, but what makes this app great is the ability to voice and picture search. The Google app makes searching an enjoyable experience while allowing you to browse your results and web pages without ever leaving the application.
  • Modern Combat 2: Advanced warfare. This has got to be the best first person shooter app I’ve played on the iPhone. Not only is the gameplay absolutely stunning with crisp graphics and an easy to use control system, but the online multiplayer takes the game to a whole new level. With the ability to play with up to 10 people in various scenarios, this really makes the game highly addictive.
  • Consume. A great way to track the usage on your iPhone, home broadband or even the rewards points on your Subway Card. Not exactly a functional app, but a great informational tool.

I could go on with this list for a while as there are so many fantastic apps available on the app store. But what do you think? Do you agree or disagree? What are your favourite apps? Get in touch and get downloading.
