Review: Iomega StorCenter ix2

The Iomega StorCenter ix2 is a network storage drive designed for both consumer & business environments. The drive has a capacity of 2TB, but can be used in a RAID configuration, giving you 1TB of mirrored RAID storage. Allowing access from a number of computers running on Windows, Mac OS X & Linux and also via a remote access address, this device is a true all-round storage must for any home.

As you can see on the left image, the device sports 3 USB 2.0 ports, allowing expansion with devices such as a Printer & a digital camera. The device connects to your network via an Ethernet port, which supports 10/100/1000 Base-T transmissions.

There are a number of factors I dislike about the Iomega StorCenter ix2 with the main downside being that it can be very tedious to setup and use when you own a Mac. This device should be more clearly instructed for Mac users, even though it is designed to work on a Mac as well as Windows. The other downsides include that it can constantly freeze when using the Time Machine backup utility and that the software is very tedious, and sometimes crashes, even on a powerful computer. The positives of the Iomega StorCenter ix2 are that the device can be quiet, it's not exactly loud which is always a good thing, and it gives you the powerful 1Gbps Ethernet connection. The software included with the StorCenter ix2 runs on Windows & Mac platforms, and sometimes it can be very touchy in response and reliability.

I would rate this device 6/10. The reasons for this being that the device is good for it's usages, but the software and reliability let it down sadly. If you'd like to buy the Iomega StorCenter ix2, then visit Iomega.com
