Janne Kaitila (aka finngamer) Interview
(Janne Kaitila aka finngamer)
Youtube hosts some of the biggest internet sensations. One of my personal favorite Youtubers has to be Janne Kaitila (aka finngamer). Finngamer brings over 168,000 channel views and over 4,900 subscribers. If you are a gamer, you will love his video uploads on his collection and special edition game unboxings. His collection might just make your jaw drop, and recently I had the chance to get a interview with him.
Hello Jane aka finngamer, I want to first start off by thanking you for taking time out of your day to participate in my interview.
Janne Kaitila (finngamer): Thank you, It's always fun to be interviewed
So for the viewers who may not know you on youtube, It would be safe to say that you are a pretty big collector of all video games correct?
I guess it's all relative. I do take pride in my collection, but there are many much larger collections out here. I'm not even the biggest collector in my home country of Finland, though I guess I'm at the top.
Video games is a big part of your life wouldn't you say?
Yes, I've been playing video games since 1984, and even today they are my favorite hobby. In the past I've worked in a game store and also done some promotional work for game publishers. Currently I'm working for a video games magazine here in Finland, called Pelaaja (translated: Gamer), so you might say games are my life. I do consider myself forunate to be able to work with the things I love.
I have to ask this question and I am sure anyone who happens to come across your youtube channel wonders this as well and that is how many games do you own? I mean the tour of your game room video alone looks like it came out of a museum for a game and gaming memorabilia that any gamer would love visit.
I currently own just over 1500 games and over 50 consoles and handhelds. I also love my three arcade machines, two Sega Namois and one SNK Neo-Geo.
After asking that I am sure that you're still on the hunt for certain games to add in your collection? What are some of the items your still on the search for?
Leaving money aside, the three games I'd most love to get are Shinrei Jusatushi Taroumaru for the Saturn, Rendering Ranger R2 for the SNES and Darius Alpha for the PC-Engine.
What made you want to start collecting in the first place?
I'm just the kind of person who likes to collect. Game collecting is just even more rewarding than “regular” collecting (like stamps, coins, cards...) as games can actually be played as well. A stamp collector can't use his stamps to mail letters and a coin collector can't use this coins as currency, but games are meant to be played and a collector has the privilege of owning a lot of gaming experiences.
When did your collection start?
I did make the mistake of selling my childhood NES and SNES when it was time to switch to another console, but in those days I wasn't a collector yet. After the N64 came I haven't sold anything, So I guess the collecting started in the late 1990's
With that being said where are you buying your games from? I mean is there a certain place that is favorable to you when it comes to finding deals?
The boring answer is eBay. You can get pretty much any game there if you have the money. The internet has made a collector's world so much smaller. I do miss the days when the only info on games was magazines and there were games that you didn't even knew existed. It was a more thrilling time to collect anything. I don't exclude any places that sell games. Game stores, net stores, supermarkets, fleamarkets...everything is fair game, I love to hunt for bargains.
With a collection as big as yours, I am sure everyone is curious. what is this collection worth?
I don't like to put a specific price tag on it, but let's just say it's five figures.
Perhaps there is some viewers that are interested in starting a collection like yours. Could you give some tips when it comes to collecting games and gaming related items?
Collect what you love. If you're into a specific console, I'd recommend focusing on it if that's your thing. I do believe you need an emotional bond with the items that you collect, otherwise they are just objects, things.
Now certainly you must have a favorite game in that collection. What would you say your favorite game in that collection would have to be and why?
My favorite game is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but my collection's pride and joy is the Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask – Limited Edition Adventure Set. It's a gorgeous boxd set that was only produced for European promo use, and there are only 1,000 of them in the world.
What has been your last game purchase and what do you think of that game?
My latest purchases were Castlevania Chronicles on the PlayStation and Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on the Game Boy Color. I was so happy to play the Super Mario All-Stars on the Wii that I had to get the GBS version of Mario as well. Can't have too much Mario!
What do you think the future of gaming holds?
I believe all three console manufacturers will keep pushing the motion controlling, but in a few years one or two of them will drop out of that race. I'm sure Nintendo has something up their sleeve for Wii 2 for the rest to copy, once again. I am happy that the current console generation is so long-lived, it's nothing but good news for the consumers (and game developers).
Your house catches on fire and you only have time to grab 3 games. What are they?
The Major's Mask Adventure Set (N64), Samurai Shodown V Special (Neo-Geo) and Metal Gear Solid 4 Limited Edition (European PS3). I guess those are my top 3 most valuable.
Out of the big 3 which dominates the others? Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii?
In this generation the Xbox 360 has the best games, but the Wii gets all the credit from me for taking a huge chance with the new control method.
If you could meet one video game character who would it be?
Samus Aran. There's something so mysterious, strong, yet vulnerable about her.
Again, I would like to thank Janne Kaitila for taking time out of his day to participate in this interview. If you would like to see finngamer's videos for yourself then head over to
