Fujifilm Finepix S1500 - One Year On

Around mid-January 2010 I purchased the Fujifilm Finepix S1500 which replaced my DSLR and spare compact camera as my primary tool for all things Photography. After a year of use, it's still soldiering along and working better than before. The camera features a 10MP sensor, 12x Optical zoom, and movie recording in VGA resolution (640x480 30fps).

The camera has done wonders for me, from taking photos in the middle of the night to taking photos in the blinding sunshine, the camera has never struggled with anything I've thrown at it. I normally use a Class 4 8GB SDHC card which is more than applicable for this camera, and for batteries you have to sadly use AA sized batteries, so I've got 4 Apple 2100mAh NiMH batteries inside it, which last over a month each time on casual use.

So, what are the downsides to this camera? Well it's simple, the movie recording absolutely sucks. The microphone just isn't strong enough for everyday use, it struggles under loud sound and is a magnet for wind noise through the microphone. The video quality isn't that good, it's a shame as I think HD footage on this camera would be a major selling point, especially at the time I bought it.

The main advantages of this camera are the sensor, it's reliable and hardly gives off any negative photo defects. Also a good advantage of the camera is the zoom range. 12x zoom is quite a lot when you consider the majority of compact cameras only support upto 5x zoom.

When I purchased the camera it cost a moderate £149.99, and now it sells for approximately £99.99, which I think is a brilliant price for what is a nice, compact camera.
