Top 10 PIN Codes Picked by iPhone Users
Among all of the security features on the iOS platform, one of the most used is the PIN code at the lock screen. It's pretty straight forward. Users set a 4 digit PIN code, and use it to gain access to their phone. Although it's a smart move to take extra security measures, users aren't particularly good at picking a diverse combination, proven by a recent study of iPhone passcodes. Keep in mind, there are 10,000 possible 4 digit combinations. The most used combinations are:
1. 1234
2. 0000
3. 2580
4. 1111
5. 5555
6. 5683 (Spelling LOVE)
7. 0852
8. 2222
9. 1212
10. 1998
If that last one doesn't show you the age group of the iOS user base, then I don't know what does. The study was conducted by Atimay, an iPhone developer with a security app for the iPhone that takes a picture of anyone that mis-enters their passcode. It's like iAlertU for iPhone. The study found that 14.4% of the apps userbase entered one of the codes above.
After some calculations, it was determined that 1/7 iPhones could easily be unlocked. (Divide 100 by 14.4)
There is an option within iOS to use a written code, instead of a numerical code. To be more secure, it is recommend that users use the written code, as there are more possible combinations that a 10 digit keypad.
