My Thoughts on webOS

Yesterday was a sad day for some people, including myself. HP finally announced the discontinuation with webOS in their products. I owned both the Pre, and the Pre Plus but recently upgraded to a Galaxy S. Here are my thoughts.

When I first got my hands on a webOS phone back in 2009, I actually really liked the OS. Notifications where done perfectly along with the amazing multitasking system. The screen and keyboard where perfect for what I required at the time. The OS had so much potential but was constantly being held back by the crappy hardware.

The Palm Pre was powered by a sluggish 600 MHz ARM Cortex A8 processor and this showed when using high quality apps, such as games or even when I had more than five applications running in the background. No CPU upgrade was found in the Pre Plus, which was a major disappointment. No real issues where fixed in the device, aside from the home button being removed.

When seeing the disaster of the Pre Plus, I thought that it was time to move on and accept I made a mistake buying the device. Although I loved the OS with a passion, I could not handle the sluggish speeds and bugs.

My fire was lit again when HP invested in Palm. This had to be the saviour to the company, they announced more devices which I loved, such as the Pre 3, HP Veer and the HP TouchPad. I actually wanted to buy the Pre 3 as I thought it would be a success. The Pre 3 never seen the light of day and the Veer and TouchPad may as well of not even shown itself.

Sales began to plummet and HP lacked support from the consumer market. Right now I was quite glad not to have invested in another Pre phone. The end was near when Best Buy announced that they didn't even sell 10% of their TouchPad's and that they had clearly wasted a lot of money.

With sales as bad as these and funds running dry for the company, HP decided to shut down the phone and tablet unit.

This led me to believe that if done right and a company took the correct procedures and spent time on webOS, they could make a damn good device.

What are your thoughts on webOS? And who should be the next buyer?

It's a sad day indeed. I was waiting to upgrade my phone, I have a Pixi Plus and for sometime. I just wish that HP would've put more effort into perfecting the devices and marketing them really well. It's going to be something I miss when my phone finally goes to rest. I hope another company comes along to buy it and revive the WebOS platform.
