Gmaps Video Review: iPhone Google Maps Browser
There has been a bit of controversy lately surrounding Apple Maps. It turns out that it isn't quite accurate, and people in Australia have actually drove into the Outback looking for a town that was dozens of kilometers away. This is a problem even in cities, where for some reason the maps aren't reading proper coordinates.
It isn't a surprise that people are sticking with other programs to get their directions on the iOS. This is one of the those apps, and one of the more affordable ones. It costs $0.99, and tends to be accurate, even when the location has been updated.
How It Works
The interface is standard. You have the majority of the screen taken up by the map itself, which can be zoomed into. When you touch the screen you will be given the options for customizing the app. This includes types of maps, and layers to help you find walking maps, auto planners and bus routes.
You can also find traffic and weather reports, points of interest, street view, terrain maps and more. Searches can be done by address or general region, and I have found it very handy for finding nice hiking areas just outside of the main cities. Especially when I am in an unfamiliar city but still want to get my hiking in.
What Others Users Are Saying
There aren't many ratings for reviews for this one, so it isn't easy to give a general impression based on a wide target audience. But I have friends and colleagues who have used it, and they say it works well. I have also tried it out, and while I see it as very similar to most programs, the public transportation and built in weather forecaster put it a step ahead.
Note: There is an official Google Maps app as well for you to check out!
