Easy DIY Steps To VOIP Soft Phone Setup

The switch from traditional telephony to the new enhanced VOIP communication system is one of the basic necessities of business organizations today. While switching to a VOIP phone system from the traditional one, people often fear the setup. The use of soft phone appears to be the most feasible way to test the system since it simply runs on computer without any investment in additional equipment. The users however feel reluctant to the setup of these soft phones. For startups, one of the best and most comprehensive softphones is that of XLite. Setting up this digital voice communication interface is not at all difficult.

Step 1: Download the executable file of this soft phone from its official site. After the download is over, extract the components and install the software on your desktop PC or laptop. When you open the soft phone, you will be prompted to fill in the SIP account details. Click the ‘Add’ button here:

Step 2:  The new window will open up where you will be prompted to fill in various details including the Display Name, User Name, Password, Authorization user name (or extension code) and the domain IP. Filling in these details will create an entry in the above shown table.

Step 3: Once you see certain entries in the table, tick the checkbox to enable the extensions that you wish to start with. You simply need to login to a certain extension to continue with the rest of the communication process. A dialer is there to dial the desired number. You can easily create a directory to store the numbers that you might require for calling.

Step 4: Sometimes, there are some issues with the quality of voice. This either happens because the settings are not compatible with your system or due to some jitter delay that is introduced by your internet connection. To do away with any loopholes in the setup of your VOIP softphone, check for the Voice Options. In the ‘Options’ window, you can set the desired voice codec to enhance the voice quality.

Step 5: To make sure that you make the most of your communication system, you should upgrade your system regularly. There is no need to configure this channel manually. You can just check the checkbox that says ‘Prompt me when an upgrade is available’ under the ‘Application’ option in General category.

Step 6: Under the ‘Devices’ option of ‘General’ category, you can check the relevant speaker and headphone settings and set the appropriate actions for securing the quality of your digital communication channel.

The quality of voice is not only affected with the voice codecs used but also with the internet bandwidth available for VOIP use. In certain organizations, the general traffic along with the voice traffic is transmitted over a shared channel. This way, there is jitter or delay in the transmission of voice traffic which deteriorates the overall quality of this digital channel that is set up for communication. For ensuring the best quality of voice communication, it is better to set up a separate channel for VOIP calls. The bandwidth of this channel should be in accordance with the maximum number of lines and channels that will be absorbed in the management of calls at the busiest hour.
