Mac OS X Mavericks Overview (Video Inside!)

Not long ago Apple released their latest update to the OS X software
line titled “Mavericks”. This new update was going to update some of the software that is already on your mac, and even add some new apps in the mix. Normally these kinds of updates cost around twenty to thirty dollars. In this case however, you can download the latest update from the app store for free. That’s right, this operating system update downloads and installs much like an application and it is free to the public. It can also be used as an upgrade from your older OS to a newer one. Although the price tag is awesome, what exactly did they add to this update that makes it shine from the rest? Let’s get started shall we?

One of the new features Mavericks offers, which is one of my personal favorites is the finder tabs. Normally you would have to open several windows and cycle through them to get from point A to point B to point C and it can become a mess real quick. However with the finder tabs you can open up several tabs in one finder window that you can also cycle through making it much easier to get from window to window. The best way to think of this is like an internet browser with its tab system. That’s exactly how it functions. For me this is useful because of how many windows I normally have open in one usage. So this can benefit other users as well.

This next feature helps you sort files and folders under certain categories. You can now tag files to a specific color and give that tag an attribute like “Photos” or “Last holiday”. This will allow you to sort out your files and be able to access them through the side bar of your finder. They used a color coated system so that you can easily find your tagged area again if you forget the name but remembered the color. The calendar application also got a facelift. It has been redesigned to look a bit simpler in detail as they are trying to do away with not so nice style application. Much like the notepad application they have which is slowly changing to something different than yellow paper with cursive text.

The two new applications that have been added are the Maps app, and iBook. The maps app can be synchronized with your apple products making it easier for searching for a location after location. The application itself is like Google maps, you type in an address and you can get directions to a certain destination and it will give you a map of how to get there like a GPS.  You can also use it like a globe and find some nifty locations on the earth. The IBook app is good for students and avid readers who use their tablets or computer device for reading. You can purchase books off of the web and read them on your computer or tablet. It’s a unique application for those who do use it.

If you get a message through your mail, the notification area now allows you to message back inline. Meaning all you have to do is hit reply and through the notification area it allows you to reply to the message without having you to have to open up your mail client. Another added feature is the ability to open up links through safari that has been shared by the people you follow on twitter. This allows for quick access linking for anyone who uses twitter often. The intro screen to safari has also been changed a little bit, looking a bit more vibrant and colorful. Or maybe that’s just me. With all of these minor changes one of the biggest ones is something more or less under the hood. The speed and response time of any newer mac is increased making it more functional than ever.

One of the biggest changes that a lot of people like, and some don’t like is the displays. You can now function with multiple displays much easier. Now when you use multiple displays your taskbar is on the second monitor as well. However if you use any full screen applications all the other apps are pushed to the secondary monitor allowing for full access. This makes productivity in the work flow a lot better than it was before.

That’s my take on the new OS X Mavericks. I was really excited the day it came out, and I even downloaded on the same day. I am still happy with the minor changes it offered, and disappointed with the wallpapers it came with. But that is something you are to judge for yourself. I hope you found this article/video useful in some kind of way. I will see you guys next time.
