Email Use and Security [Infographic]

Almost every day we use our email addresses. We use them to communicate with others, to send and receive files and to sign-up/login on other sites and services, like social networks. Because they are linked to so many different accounts. and it's normally needed to login, some would even say an email address is an access gateway to the internet.

Stephanie Garcia of simpleemails.org has pieced together this cool infographic about email use from around the world and uploaded in to the gallery on Visual.ly.

As it turns out 70% of global email usage is done by North America and Europe (with a 43% NA/27% EU split). That's almost 3/4 of all email use! North Americans contribute the most to global email usage by a long, long way.

The next closes region is Asia and the Pacific with 16%. The remaining 14% of email users are throughout the rest of the world. It just goes to show how much the developed world makes use of technology in everyday life, just take a look at how things have changed over the last 20 years.

Email Hacking

Did you know that 1 in every 5 email accounts get hacked? Even on the big name providers such as Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail?

Weak passwords and phishing scams contribute highly to the numbers.

Email is for Work

57% of people spend half their working day using email but only 39% of people regularly send and read email outside of work. Basically most of us use traditional email at work but when we're at home we just use our addresses as login IDs for other services/

Around half of you believe that email reduces the need for other types of secure day-to-day file storage and you can even email files Google Drive using just a Gmail address.

Email Spam Trends

We absolutely hate spam and have got quite good at recognizing it considering that 90% of all email sent is spam. It's probably one of the main contributing factors why 17% of Americans create a new email address every 6 months. 69% of us report spam based solely on the subject line of the message and 43% of people click the 'spam' button after seeing the name or email address the message came from.

Some even take the notion of spam reporting too far - with 21% of people reporting messages as spam even when they know it isn't. Most of the spam we receive is from the Dating/Sex industry. In fact a staggering 62.73% of reported spam is from the Dating/Sex industry. Spam about jobs or pharmaceuticals are the next 2 biggest offenders, however with both of them sitting around the 10% mark it's clear that nothing even comes close to the level of annoyance a dating email provokes.

Email for Business

When it comes to people checking their email on smartphones and other mobile devices play a big part. 35% of business professionals check email on a mobile device and with 43% of mobile email users checking their messages 4 or more times a day it's likely that they are quicker to respond when using a mobile device. It means that the mobile search industry is big business.
