Mobile Search Behavior [Infographic]
When it comes to searching online the first thing anyone does is move to the nearest internet connected device and type in a search query. The nearest device is often a mobile device. The very nature of a mobile device means we always have one at hand. Think about your mobile phone. How often is it either in your hand, in your pocket or on the table in front of you? Pretty much all the time. It's always nearby. That's what I was thinking when I stumbled on this last week when I was writing about Infographic start-up Visual.ly.
Mobile search doesn't just include smartphones, it includes tablet PCs as well, like Android tablets or ipads. 60% of mobile searching is done with a smartphone while the other 40% use a tablet PC. With tablets replacing desktops rapidly it would be crazy not to cater to the 40% using tablets to search however with the vast amount of screen sizes on tablets designing your website responsively is key.
Mobile search is a big thing for businesses on the web. Turns out that 70% of mobile searches result in an action on a website within an hour. If you're website isn't optimized for mobiles you're missing out big time. 40% of people on mobile leave a site if it doesn't look right on their device, or isn't optimized for mobile at all.
Times have changed and mobile search is a quick way to find the information you need and an easy way to take action on something else you've seen. Seems we do all of these things while we watch TV as 40% of mobile search is conducted in front of one. And while we're at it mobile has connected TV and social together to make watching something on TV more engaging and enjoyable. One third of all Twitter users Tweeted something about a TV program last year.
The end conclusion here is that if you're an internet user you've probably use mobile search. If your 18-29 almost half of you do it every day! For a website owner the takeaway here is you should be catering to mobile search - on smartphones and tablets.
