3 Apps to Help Kids Learn Math

There are so many apps out there today that you can find almost anything to add to your smart phone or tablet – from games to restaurant guides to news outlets and much, much more. One of the great parts about mobile technology today is that it’s not just for entertainment and information purposes – in fact, mobile apps are one of the best and most underutilized resources for education.

There are countless education apps out there today that are helping kids learn new skills – like reading, handwriting, and logic. Some of the best education apps, though, are meant to teach kids about numbers and math skills. If you’re looking for an app to help your child improve their math abilities, check out the list below; these three apps will not only help your kid improve their numbers skills but allow them to have a great time while doing it.

1. Mathmateer

App developer Dan Russell-Pinson created Mathmateer, an app that has received several accolades for its outstanding teaching abilities – including a feature in the New York Times, an Editor’s Choice Award from the Children’s Technology Review, and a place in the Top 10 Apps for Elementary School Kids from app directory Appolicious.

In Mathmateer, the goal is to build a rocketship to launch into space. In order to complete the ship, though, students must complete basic math challenges – which include counting money, recognizing patterns, telling time, and understanding fractions and square roots. Mathmateer is a great app for your elementary school aged kid; the ultimate goal of the program makes it feel like a game, and the various aspects of math it forces kids to practice are varied and wide-reaching. Mathmateer will only cost you $0.99 to download.

2. Park Math

Park Math, created by Duck Duck Moose, Inc., consistently appears on lists of the top apps for kids. One reason Park Math is beloved because its graphics are bright-colored and pretty. But also, Park Math offers levels for preschool children of different skill levels, and it works on tons of skills – from counting, to addition and subtraction, to sorting, to sequences.

Your preschooler will enjoy Park Math because they can progress through different stages, and its high-quality appearance and catchy music make it feel more like a game than a learning activity.

3. Math Ninja HD Free

Razeware LLC creates Math Ninja HD Free – a math app that is a perfect combination of work and play. In Math Ninja, your kid will fight a giant tomato villain by solving math problems along the way. Math Ninja alternates problem solving sessions with fun chances to fight the bad guys – and you can’t get to the fun parts without getting the math parts right.

Math Ninja HD Free is a great app for kids who have a hard time focusing for extended periods of time, or who are less keen on using an app for something that feels like homework rather than a game. Kids won’t even notice they’re learning when they use Math Ninja HD Free. Also, an added perk – as its name suggests – is that the app is free to download and use.
