7 Science Fiction Inspired Upcycle Projects

Everything and anything can be upcycled into new things these days. Some of them are useful, some of them are decorative, and some of them just make us feel nostalgic. The items gathered below are our very favorite science fiction inspired upcycle projects from jewelry to robots and everything in between.

Tech Jewelry

Tech Jewelry

Inger creates incredible jewelry out of tech pieces like microchips and robot charms. She creatively puts simple things together to make something beautiful that any geek (and several non-geeks) would be more than happy to wear. My favorite is the microchip bracelet, but they all have just the right balance of aesthetic appeal and nerd-chic design.

Floating Rock Sculptures

Floating Rock Sculptures

These rock sculptures are certainly artistic and definitely have a science fiction feel to them as they seem to float in mid-air. They are gorgeous to look at and reminiscent of orbiting planets or asteroids. With a bit of wire and some creativity, the possibilities here are endless.

Friendly Robots

Friendly Robots

These robots made from cans and bits of odds and ends from the junk drawer are adorable. They can easily be made into a family project and placed in a garden, a child's room, or even a nursery. The best part about them is that they are held together with magnets making them versatile and a great toy for older children.

Atari Robots

Atari Robots

These robots aren't as kid-friendly as the ones above, but they are made from toys! With the use of some old Atari controllers and random pieces of junk, the creator M.C. Langer made some adorable little robots that actually light up! While they may require adult construction, they make a great conversation piece!

PADD

PADD

This Star Trek Voyager PADD makes me a pretty happy science fiction fan. It has a very simple construction, though the link here to Matt Munson's pre-made templates seems not to work so you may have to create your own. Still, the design itself is a very simple one and most of the items you need to make it can probably be found around your house. It ends up being an excellent prop or decorative piece, though some have suggested modifying it as a tablet cover which could also be a lot of fun!

Tardis

Tardis

This Tardis model looks incredible when it's complete and the construction isn't too difficult, though there are a lot of steps involved. The result is well worth it and is sure to get the attention of any Whovian who might pass by. In fact, as soon as you tell them that you made it yourself they will probably ask for one of their own! The materials are almost entirely made up of things you probably have around the house, templates are provided, and the result is amazing. One of my favorite upcycles!

Borg Headset

Borg Headset

For only the truest of science fiction fans, this Borg headset looks amazing when completed and has a relatively simple construction. Each step is provided in detail and there is a lot of room for potential substitutions if they need to be made. What's great about this is that most of us have probably had a broken headset or headphones at some point or another and this turns that junk into something that you can definitely brag about.

What are some of your favorite science fiction upcycles? Have you tried any of these projects? Post in the comments and let us know!
