Flappy Bird Review

Over the past week I’ve been hearing a lot of good and bad things about this hit sensation called “Flappy Bird”. But what is flappy bird? Believe it or not it is an Android and iOS game made by Dong Nguyen and as soon as it became a big hit, it was taken off of the map due to the creator saying he didn’t want this fame and didn’t mean for this game to be that successful. So on February 8th Flappy Bird was taken off of the app store so no one could play the game anymore. I wondered why this game was a personal favorite by many, so I decided to look around until I found an exact copy of the game made in Flash.  So it may not be the original, but it can give me a good insight on what the hype was all about for this game.

As soon as the game is started I noticed on thing right off of the top of my head, and that is that the graphics look similar if not exact of that of Super Mario Brothers. So after checking the sprite sheets for the Super Mario Games, other than the pipes being a lighter color the bird is no were to be found in the sprite sheet, unless it’s the orange fish edited. So after getting that off of my head I began to play. The gameplay is simple in concept, but difficult in execution. The whole point of the game is to get your fish character to the end or to the farthest without dying. How do you do that? You do this by tapping (or in my case clicking) on the screen. Not so fast twitchy fingers, you have to make sure you don’t go to high or drop to low. Because if you do any of those two you will die, and die, and die. I was beginning to see why people were saying the game was fun and addicting. It’s addicting because of the challenge, but it is fun because we are making ourselves think it’s fun. There is no music, and only some lame sound effects. So why is this game so popular?

I think I have an answer to that. Try playing a game called “Cookie Clicker”. At the bottom there will be links for these games so don’t worry, you won’t have to google much. The game Cookie Clicker is simple, all you have to do is click a cookie and buy some things to help increase your cookie clicking activities. You end world hunger by producing a vast amount of cookies that would make Santa Claus cringe. This kind of game sounds boring right? Well believe it or not it is almost like flappy bird but without the challenge. So something as simple as clicking a cookie or a bird can make you feel like you’re having fun, but maybe that’s the trick.  A lot of this may seem bitter, but Flappy Birds was a success in its own way. It also showed that something so simple can be not only addictive and fun to a lot of people, but a success in such a big way. It’s a shame the creator took it down, and the only thing is known is that he took it down because of the fame. But that is all we know. So if you want to play the games mentioned in this video or article, click the links below.
