Possible iMac refresh?

While searching macrumors today, I came across an interesting article. They say how many users say that there is limited iMac availability. Another report stated that their orders for a 20'' iMac have been unexpectedly delayed. Here's a direct quote from the buyer.

This certainly falls in the realm of speculation, but I ordered a number of baseline 20" iMacs for work, with no custom configuration, and I've had my order delayed for a week, followed by this message today:

"Due to an unexpected delay, we are unable to ship the following item(s) by the date that you were originally quoted:

MB324LL/A, IMAC 20/2.66/2GB/320GB/SD-USA will now ship on or before Feb 05, 2009

Appleinsider had confirmed from their sources that Apple's supply of iMacs are indeed "constrained" for immediate future. Appleinsider believes that Apple is planning on updating their lines of iMacs. The last time that the have been updated was back in April 2008 so this could be the possibility. Keep reading!

iPhone 2,1

cc: http://thecreativeone.tv/

Hello Tech World,

As many of you guys speculated, the new iPhone firmware reveals code for a next model. As some of you thought, the iPhone 3G doesn’t appear to be the last iPhone for Apple.

In the newly released firmware (2.2.1), it shows a description of the 2,1. As Apple has used before, the format of labeling iPod touchs and iPhones.

The original iPhone was labeled “1,1″, while the iPhone 3G was model “1,2.” The iPod touch has already moved on to the 2,1 label as the second generation and was released recently during September’s music event.

Less is known for the iPhone “2,1″, however, since the iPod touch recieved such a major upgrade during the advancement from first generation iPod touch to the second generation, it is safe to assume that this will be the same for the iPhone.

P.A. Semi has been working on iPhone chips since last spring, and other evidence has surfaced indicating that Apple might be planning to upgrade the iPhone’s graphics sometime in the near future. -CNET NEWS

Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller implied that the iPhone upgrades were in the routine of upgrading every June/July, however, this doesn’t always prove consistant since Macworld’s date didn’t follow the regular product cycles we were expecting. So bottom line, hopefully, another iPhone release is on tap.

Why Are iPods So Expensive: Secret Apple Tax

Wonder why the iPod is so expensive as compared to other MP3 players? Well, sure - it looks and works great - but is quality necessarily the main driving force behind its high prices?

Perhaps not. Here’s an article in Popular Mechanics about the secret "Apple Tax":

Last year, when Apple introduced the original iPhone and the latest generation of iPods, another new product came out of Cupertino, Calif., but this one received little fanfare. It was a proprietary authentication chip. The chip works like a silicon key that unlocks streaming video functionality on iPhones and iPods and generally authorizes the devices to work with approved accessories. The advent of the “auth chip” made it impossible for any third-party company to produce iPod-compatible gadgets without dealing first with Apple—the only company selling the chip. Previous-generation iPods could output video over a generic $2 iPod video cable, but new phones and iPods require officially licensed Apple cables—and these can cost up to $50.

The chip has become a headache for many accessory manufacturers, who complain that they sometimes have to compromise on quality to pay for the chip and other Apple licensing fees, while still maintaining price points consumers can afford. “If we didn’t have to pay Apple for the dock and auth chip, we could have made a much better speaker for the same price,” said an official at a major electronics maker, who, like several sources for this story, requested anonymity because of fears that speaking with the press could jeopardize his company’s relationship with Apple.
