My Thoughts: The New iPad

Yes, I know that I am VERY late at uploading this video, everyone. My apologies. But, the new iPad has been announced (iPad 3/iPad HD/iPad 2S). Apple launched this bad boy on March 16th and was no disappointment. The event took place in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Tim Cook took to the stage as CEO of the multi-billion dollar company and started of by talking about the Post-PC World and the mass amount of products that Apple have sold. Tim then started to talk about the Apple TV. Unsparingly, there was no announcement of an Apple Television Set but in fact an updated Apple TV Box. The Apple TV now streams movies in 1080p HD resolution. A new user interface for the new Apple TV, although owners of the 720p Apple TV box has the get the new look by software updating.

Tim Cook then went on to speak about the iPad 2 and how it has changed things in so many ways. He compared the iPad user interface to a Samsung Galaxy Tab's user interface and said how the iPad 2 user interface was better. And, roughly 17 minutes into the keynote, Tim Cook announced the New iPad. Not the iPad 3, iPad HD or the iPad 2S. Simply just "The New iPad." Personally, I think Apple has done this because it looks like the iPad will be sticking around for a good while now and it would be stupid to announce and iPad 6/7/8 a few years down the line. So, Apple, I give you props for that.

Phill Schiller, who is Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at Apple took to the stage to announce some of the new features that will be coming to the The New iPad and these features were:

  • 2048x1536 PPI Retina Display (3.1 Million Pixels All Together), 44% More Saturated
  • Apple A5X Duel Core Processor with Quad Core Graphics
  • New Battery (10 Hours of Battery Life, Instant On)
  • 5 Megapixel iSight Camera with Auto Focus and Face Detection (Front Facing Camera is VGA Qaulity)
  • 1080P HD Video Capture
  • 4G LTE on AT&T and Verizon
  • Personal Hotspot
  • Dictation (Siri equivalent)
  • iPhoto for iPad (as well as iPhone and iPod Touch)

Later, Phill invited some Game Developers up to the stage to demonstrate their new game for the iPad. Demoed was Infinity Blade, as well as others.

iPhoto was also demoed by one of the high-up members of Apple. (Unfortunately, I can't recall his name). The app looked great with lots of simple features such as Auto-Enhance and Crop tools.

Lastly, Tim Cook came back onto the stage to say a few final words before the keynote ended. A slide appeared in the background that said:

2012. There is a lot to look forward to.

Tim went on to thank everyone for their attendance and said that "it is a privilege of a lifetime to work with so many of the most innovative people one Earth."

Mr. Cook walked of stage and the keynote had finished.

So, what is your thoughts on The New iPad? Are you happy with the improvements? Could Apple have done any better? Are you going to buy The New iPad? I certainly am! Please comment down below!

Evi for iPad / iPhone

Following the excellent review by  Ryan Bates last week on Evi the Siri alternative I downloaded the App onto my iPad and have had a few days to play with it.

The search facilities are excellent and the quality of the voice recognition is superb. I have a strong West Country (UK) accent which Siri has found hard to understand.  The AI gives some fun and generally accurate results.

This is not an App I will be using everyday to manage my life as I does not yet have the functionality to update calendars, send emails etc.  It is fun and definitely shows what can be done.

The iPad 3 Announcement: What to Expect

There have been, so far, many rumors leading up to the iPad 3 announcement, expected to take place on March 7th. Many of these rumors detail new features like an upgraded processor, quad-core, LTE, etc.. But what exactly can we expect from the iPad 3 announcement?

First of all, the processor. While an A6 processor would be the logical next-generation processor in Apple's sequence, there has supposedly been a leaked iPad 3 part containing the processor, which has been dubbed the "A5x". This has lead to some speculation that the processor will be an improved version of the current A5 processor rather than a new A6 processor. The A5x Processor shown on a leak part of, supposedly, the iPad 3. Apple is expected to announce the iPad 3 on March 7th.

A lot of Android devices have started to get quad-core processors recently. This has lead some to believe that Apple will be doing the same with their iPad 3. The extra 2 cores could significantly improve their processor performance.

Unlike many rumors that came along prior to the iPad 2 launch, we don't expect a change in screen size. However, a retina display would be very possible. Just as we saw with the iPhone and iPod Touch, this would improve the resolution on the iPad's display. The current display, running at a resolution of 1024 x 768, would get more pixels, supposedly upgrading it to a 2048 x 1536 screen resolution. This would make text and images, especially games, more sharp and allow for even more detail. "Real Racing 2" being played on an iOS device with a retina display. A retina display could be coming to the iPad 3.

As we've also heard, Apple has been hiring LTE engineers. It is a possibility that we may see this technology come to the 3G iPad. Many speculate that the delay of the implementation of this technology has been caused by possible reduced battery life. Or the technology could simply be too new. We have constantly seen Apple hold-off on including brand-new technology in their products in the past.

As in the iPhone 4S, improved cameras may be an option as well. Siri is unlikely, however. As always, there will be more last-minute rumors that will surely circulate in the days directly before the announcement.

Wacom Bamboo Pen & Paper App Review

There are many styluses on the market now for Apple products that claim to be the best. All ranging in price, design, and function. I have used most of them, and to be honest it's hard to say that most of them have been worth the money. One thing to also keep an eye open for are fakes, there are hundreds and hundreds of fakes on the market, most of which consume the market on eBay. I have owned a few of the fakes and cheaper ones, and one sign to note is the material of the tip, if the tip is a shiney rubbery material, don't get it. Wacom has producted a fantastic stylus and app to match it! The app is currently free, and the stylus ranges in price, but can be found on Amazon for around $25 for the black one (unfortunately some places charge more for different colors). The tip is a soft rubber that is pressure sensitive and one of the best styluses on the market.
