Why Macs Get Less Viruses Than PCs

I have owned many PCs in the past and have fortunately not had any major viruses, but I have had viruses. I have used virus protection software like Norton, Mcafee, AVG and Windows Defender. Now, on my iMac running Mac OS Snow Leopard 10.6.1 I don’t have any virus protection software installed at this current time. It has been said that Macs do not get viruses, which of course isn’t true. Macs get viruses. PCs get viruses. So how do you back up the statement that Macs don’t get viruses? By saying this, Macs get viruses, but not as many as PCs. Yes, we can just say that and let it be set in stone, but there is a reason why Macs get less viruses than PCs. First off, PCs are 90% prone to viruses, because most hacks, viruses and whatnot are coded and developed only for Windows OS running computers. Secondly, viruses can get through even with some viruses blocking software. Macs have their own software to prevent viruses built-in to the firmware and OS. Windows is more easy to get viruses, because it is more likely to have a virus on the PC without the owner knowing. There isn’t a computer or OS that is “virus proof”, but Mac OS 10 is very hard to be hacked into. Windows is also able to be hacked and turned into a Mac via a process called “Hacint0sh”. On a Mac, there isn’t a need to hack Windows on it, because of Apple’s Bootcamp software and third party software like VMware Fusion and Parallels. This post in no way is targeted to be hate for PC or Mac or Linux. It is simply just my thoughts and opinions on why it is more likely to get a virus on a PC than a Mac. And if the Mac were more popular among business and schools as the main computer, they would be almost as prone to viruses. Thanks for reading.

Power Mac G4 Upgrade Part One.

Hey Guys! This is my first post on thecreativeone.tv and I really hope that you enjoy reading my blog posts!

Recently I bought a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver, with 733Mhz G4 processor, 256mb RAM, No hard drive and the the crumby 32mb standard graphics card. From the moment i got the machine I was impressed with the design of the machine and even by today's standards compared to some PC's you see around today, the Power Mac is still a beautiful machine.

I really wanted to upgrade the machine to bring it back to date, to hopefully run some programs that i run on my Mac Pro and run as a media center and such.

To upgrade my Power Mac i bought a 120gb western digital hard drive, 1gb RAM from Crucial Ram and PCI usb hub.

The parts went in the machine nicely and after a few hours work i was running 10.4.11 on the Power Mac and it was running pretty quick for today. But i had a few more problems, the machine was very loud, and the graphics card couldn't keep up when running YouTube videos etc, which is expected. Two things that would really bug me.

I went down to PC World (The name is really ironic to say i was going to be putting the parts in a Mac) and i bought three new silent fans, one that would replace the fan cooling the CPU, another to replace the big 120mm fan that was cooling the majority of the computer, and the last one that was blowing air out of the power supply unit.

I have on phrase to say, Mac's do not like to be ripped to pieces. It was a nightmare trying to get all of the fans out of the mac, and then replacing them with all new ones, but after a few hours and several scuffed knuckles, I had replaced every fan inside the Power Mac.

All the pain was definitely worth it though as when the Power mac was all back together it was considerably quieter than it previously was. Next up was the graphics card.

Now for financial reasons, the cheapest way for me to upgrade the Power Mac's graphics card, was to buy a PC Graphics card and flash it for use with a Mac, easier said than done. The graphics card came, we popped it into an old PC i had laying around and booted up Windows XP.

We created an MS DOS CD, which is considerably hard to make than creating an MS DOS floppy disc and booted into MS DOS, to find out, to flash the graphics card we needed to use a floppy disc, which naturally, because floppy discs are nearly as old as me, I don't have a floppy disc drive or any floppy discs, so it was time to scavenge around.

Now luckily because a friend of mine, has old computers for testing and upgrading, he could find me an old floppy disc drive we could pop into the PC we was using to flash the graphics card, again because he'd never had a need for floppy discs, he didn't have any.

So more work had to be done, I had to go onto trusty eBay and buy some floppy discs, something I thought i'd never do, this morning, a packet of floppy discs landed on my door mat. Stay tuned for an update, and I hope you will enjoy my blog posts in time to come!

How To: Set-Up XP Mode in Windows 7

XP mode in windows 7 allows you to run windows xp, for free, virtually on your computer. Although not all versions of windows 7 will support this feature the video bellow shows you how to set-up xp mode in the current release candidate. A really cool feature with XP mode is the ability to run apps virtually without opening the entire XP virtual machine. This makes it very easy to run apps not currently supported by windows 7.

When Windows 7 launches later this year the most expensives versions of the OS will include this option. This post was brought to you by Michael Sherlock, for more of my content why not subscribe to my youtube channel?

A Dock For Windows?

Have you ever wondered if there was a way to get the Mac dock on Windows? Well there are many different docks available on the web, such as, Objectdock and Rocketdock. Well i searched various searches to find one that i liked.

The first one i tried was Rocketdock. It had a lot of settings but it didn’t have the themes and appearance i was looking for. It had some cons which were being extremely light weight, it didn’t take up that much RAM usage, it did not have any lag issues, and it always ran smoothly. This came with a few icons but they seemed that they were for 12 and under?

RocketDock

Secondly, I tried Objectdock. It was pretty nice, it had a lot of settings but it also didn’t have the themes and appearance i was looking for. It didn’t run very smoothly, it lagged very much, and sometimes froze and stopped responding. One thing that I don’t like about it is that it has a paid version, the paid version adds tabbed docks, you can have multiple docks on your desktop at the same time, multiple monitor support, and system tray support. This comes with very useful docklets also, such as, Start Menu Docklet, clock docklet, weather docklet, and web search docklet.

Objectdock

Lastly, I tried RK Launcher. At first, it was confusing but it got really easy to use after a whille. Honestly, RK Launcher is my favorite out of all of these docks. It comes with about 100+ icons (Mac Icons), not as many docklets as Objectdock but almost as many, the dock spaces are identical to Mac OS 10’s, it has the Mac Genie Effect, and it is extremely easy to custimize and use. It runs very smooth on my Desktop, no lag issues at all. Sometimes it freezes and stop responding, but not very often. I want to say so much about RK Launcher but I would bore you. Out of all of the docks I have tried, this one is the most Mac-like. Here’s something to pay attention too, its only in Beta, so this is only the beginning of the custimization, in the future there will be many more features such as, docklets and icons and they will fix most of the issues.

RK Launcher

Want An RK Launcher Custom Pack? It comes with Rk Launcher, 1 extra theme, about 30+ more icons, iShut Program, 3 powerful docklets.

Download Link Here

One recomended docklet you should get is the stacks docklet. It does the stacks and grid feature when you open a folder in the dock. Very similar to a Mac’s dock! If you want a dock for Windows, Rk Launcher is the one to pick. I recomend you go try it out! If I Was to put these in order to least to greatest it would be, Objectdock, Rocketdock, then RK Launcher.

Ratings:

Rocketdock – 4 out of 5

Objectdock – 3 out of 5

RK Launcher – 5 out of 5

Here are the download links to each:

  1. Rocketdock
  2. Objectdock
  3. RK Launcher

If you want to custimize your docks and get more themes, docklets, icons, etc here are the links:

There's Useful Software In Windows, Who Knew?

So everyone says Macs are better, buy a Mac! Well, i strongly agree with that. But i don't have a Mac, so that changes the subject altogether. Their are some very useful third party software for Windows.

One program that totally copies Mac, well 3 programs, are RKLauncher, Objectdock, and Rocketdock. They can also do the stacks function with the stacks plug-in. These programs are very very helpful for windows, especially if you don't want clutter on your desktop, i have nothing on my desktop and i use RKLauncher as my start menu.

Another program that i use daily is Launchy. It is like the search in vista and spotlight on Mac, its searches as you type, for everything in your drivers. I personally use this at least 30+ times a day. My opinion is, is that it is 10 times better than the Vista search. You can download skins, plug-ins, and you can also set your own hot-keys.

Have you ever wanted to be notified when you get an Email, notifications from Facebook, MySpace, and LinkedIn, and tweets from twitter? Have you ever wanted to chat on all of your IM's (instant messengers)? Well you can now, with Digsby!! It supports AIM, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk, IRC, Jabber, and the Facebook chat. It supports the following emails: Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL/AIM Mail, and IMAP and POP. The social networks it supports are Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

Do you like to listen to music? Do you like to go on the internet? If you do then Songbird is the program for you. The reason why I'm posting this program is because well you can do 2 things in one program. Actually, you can add so many add-ons for Songbird, there are add-ones being added for it every day. One little extra you can do is search other peoples blogs and websites and you can download their music that's on that page. You can customize Songbird as much as you want, you can get themes, which are called feathers to give full customization. I have customize Songbird to be an exact look alike to iTunes.

Have you ever wanted to download music videos or extract the audio from videos? Well here's you chance! Just download TubeTilla, what happens is, is that you download the FLV file and you have to either keep it as FLV or convert it to MP4, MP3, WMV, DIVX, XVID, MPEG, or MOV all in the same program!! Also, you can change the name before you convert it.

Another very useful software i use a lot is a media converter. This one i think does the most out of all the converters I've tried. It is called WM Converter. You can convert, merge, split, or process any bit of content into WMV, MP4, MPG, AVI, FLV, 3GP, and MP3. You can convert the content into the following content: Good, Better, Low, Custom, and the Default. You can convert multiple media at the same time. Also, you can choose the input and output folders. All you have to do is, drag the content into WM Converter and click your options, and your all done. Its the easiest converter i have ever used!

Here is a useful tool if you want to get rid of a bit of space. If your like me, you want to have the most space you can have. You may know this program, its called CCleaner. I run mine about twice a day and each time i do so, i remove about 60MB. You can choose the programs and folders you want to clean out. First off, what you to do is go to Cleaner, and adjust your settings, then click Analyze then click Run Cleaner. Next, you go to Registry, and click the options you want to scan, then click Scan For Issues, after it scans click Fix Selected Issues. Then a confirm window will pop up saying, Fix Issue or Fix All Issues, click one and then click close.
