Is Apple pushing the iPod Touch too far?

Hey everyone, I'm sure that your all familiar with Apple's iPod Touch line. The iPod Touch is known as the iPhone, without the phone. But is that really what it is? Now, its the iPhone, without the phone plan. We have applications like Skype, and AIM, that make up for the actual phone, and the sms service. Now all we need is a camera, and this truly is an iPhone. Has Apple taken this too far? Rumor has it, that when the iPod Touch line gets updated next month, we’ll get an iPod with an onboard mic, and camera. Is this for the better, or for the worse?

I completely agree with what you're saying, and I think you're right. If Google Voice ever comes back, this will be a cheaper iPhone, and it'll be better since it won't have a carrier limitation. I think Apple is becoming obsessed with allowing the two devices to compete with one another, and it's good for us, but the company might not benefit from this later.

My honest opinion, yes. They're going way too far if these rumours are correct.

Makes us iPhone users seem a lot less significant!!

nah! i think its good! because there are a lot of people out there that really want a iphone but simply afford it. And you got to remember that your paying for a service, so the ipod touch is great for having if you want an iphone

I think its great that they are breaking away from AT&T.
Hopefully they switch to Verizon, they would make a killing and the service would be superior.

I think that the iPod Touch would be a great device with an onboard mic. But Apple could make an external camera that goes in the 30 pin adapter instead of an internal one.

why would it be bad? it just gives those who dont use AT&T the privilege to use one of these devices without:
1. canceling their current phone plan (usually is a fee)
2. having to purchase an iPhone and jail breaking it, which is ILLEGAL.
3. pay the ridiculous monthly fee for features that some might not need.

in my opinion, it would be extremely selfish for apple NOT to make the updates.

No, I don't think the iPod Touch is going too far.

I can't afford an iPhone...

But the iPod Touch is looking much more appealing.

I think that pushing too far with the iPod line wouldn't be an issue, if they focused on the player as a media playback device. Apple did an amazing thing by introducing the iPod to the mass market. It used to be about having all of your favorite songs wherever you want. But now, it's not about the music. If you take a look at the Zune HD on the other hand, that looks like the best media playback device (soon to be) released so far. The Zune HD is now for music lovers. The iPod touch is now a device with too many apps to sort which also, coincidentaly, plays music.

@ Kyle Seehan:
Do you really think people will switch to the Zune? We're talking about music lovers here. Do you thing that those music lovers will switch to the Zune after using an iPod for lets say 4 years? I don't think so.

I don't think Apple is taking the iPod touch to far. I think, even if it has a camera and GPS, it still won't be an iPhone. Because WiFi is not everywhere, I don't think people are going to use the iPod touch as a phone. I also don't think people will switch from the iPhone to the iPod touch. I do think that people will be switching from the iPod Touch almost iPhone to the real deal.

You can only be angry about the itouch upgrades if you own an iphone and begin to feel that you should have just bought an itouch.

But i wouldnt worry if i owned an iphone cos you guys can stay connected wherever you and if you didnt have that capabilty you WOULD miss it.

what does apple care the money is still going to them anyway. Its really at&t who could potentially get screwd (i dont knoow about you but im not reallly against that

well some people don't need the cell phone feature like younger teens.but its hard to say if they should make the iphone better now ... and its too late to downgrade the ipod touch.so i think little adds to the iphone like front camera for video call maybe?but whatever
