A Brief History of OS X

Today, August 24th, Apple announced that the new version of Mac OS X, Snow Leopard, would be released this Friday, August 28th. Everyone's been obsessed with Snow Leopard news, but lets take a look back at what came to be... Mac OS X.

2001: Cheetah Mac OS X Cheetah/Puma

The first version of Mac OS X, known as Cheetah, was not filled with many features the average user could use. However, what it did was put Mac into the next generation. This version introduced the first drafts, if you will, of Carbon, Cocoa, Aqua, and OpenGL for the base of soon-to-came apps that were amazing.

September 2001: Puma

Puma was more of an update to Cheetah, rather than an official new OS. On the other hand, Puma did give OS X the boost it needed to look like a legitimate operating system...

August 2002: Jaguar Mac OS X Jaguar

Jaguar gave the Mac user a whole new experience, that wasn't as good as it could have been, but was still enjoyable to the consumer. Jaguar brought plenty of enhancements, apps, and new features, such as iChat, the beginning of Finder, Quartz Extreme, and Rendevous, which is now known as Bonjour.

October 2003: Panther Mac OS X PantherPanther's most important feature was coming with a free chill pill for Mac users. Pantherwas the first release of OS X that madeit a real operating system. It was jam-packed with more stable functionalities and more responsive actions and apps, including Expose, Safari, and iChat AV.

April 2005: Tiger Mac OS X Tiger

Tiger did slow down Apple's sequence of updates. However, Apple allowed the time to be put to good use. Tiger included many key features, including Spotlight, Dashboard, and 64-bit support, to maximize the use of your Mac's RAM. Hundreds of other features were also added that would lead Apple's transition to Intel and be on store shelves longer than any version of OS X released.

October 2007: Leopard Mac OS X Leopard

Leopard has since been leading the industry standard and is now a favorite among Mac users. It brought some major cosmetic changes to the user interface of OS X. Leopard also added key features to OS X to maximize your hard disk space, as well as your screen real estate, such as Stacks, Spaces, and Time Machine.

September 2009: Snow Leopard Mac OS X Snow Leopard, August 28th...

Snow Leopard is the first of OS X to be only for Intel Macs. For $29, Snow Leopard appears to do the same thing to Leopard as Puma did for Cheetah: make it better. Wait til' Friday rolls around!
